Linda Hamilton Recalls Perfect (& Emotional) Reaction To Stranger Things Season 5 Casting

Summary

  • Linda Hamilton’s response to being cast in
    Stranger Things
season 5 is mixed, as she is excited to join but feels like an ”
    impostor
” in the ’80s-set show that she has loved.
  • The show intentionally evokes nostalgia for ’80s horror and sci-fi tropes, and Hamilton’s adds to its nostalgic sensibilities.
  • Hamilton’s role in season 5 has not been revealed, but as a series regular, she is expected to bring her action-heroine expertise to the unfolding drama against threats from Vecna and the Upside Down.

Linda Hamilton had the perfect response to learning she was cast in Stranger Things season 5. Expected to be released on Netflix sometime in 2025, filming on the show’s highly anticipated final season finally got underway in January this year after significant delays due to the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Hamilton, best known for her role as Sarah Connor in The Terminator movies, was announced to be joining the cast during last year’s Netflix TUDUM event.

Speaking with Us Weekly, Hamilton recalled that while she was excited to join the cast of Stranger Things season 5, the opportunity “kind of ruined the show for me.” Explaining that she was a fan who has relished the show since its inception, Hamilton stated that she never watches any project she stars in and as such will not be watching season 5 upon its eventual release. Check out her comments below:

I’ve watched every season with relish. I just love it … So it’s kind of, like, impostor syndrome where I don’t [feel that I] fit in there. That’s a whole world set in the ’80s. When you really buy into something, you don’t see yourself in it. So I think, in a way, it kind of ruined the show for me. I never watch [a project], once I’m in something … It would just completely take me out of the reality of it to see myself in there. So I won’t be watching [Season 5].

Why Linda Hamilton Is The Perfect Addition To Stranger Things

Not only does Stranger Things offer viewers a healthy dose of nostalgia by setting its action in the 1980s, it also intentionally harkens back to many of the horror and science fiction tropes made popular at the time. Inspired by the works of Stephen King, Steven Spielberg, Wes Craven, and John Carpenter, series creators and showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer have often used the show as a vehicle to celebrate some of the most memorable cinematic moments from a very specific time in pop culture history.

This unabashed love of ‘80s cinema was also heightened by the show’s various casting decisions, which have included some of the decade’s biggest names. Aside from the key roles played by Winona Ryder and Matthew Modine, later seasons would also introduce additional characters played by The Goonies’ Sean Astin, The Princess Bride’s Cary Elwes, A Nightmare on Elm Street’s Robert Englund, and Aliens’ Paul Reiser. The decision to add Hamilton, renowned for her role as the original Sarah Connor, is a perfect continuation of this trend and is guaranteed to elevate the show’s nostalgic sensibilities even further.

Sarah Connor has also been played in live-action by Emilia Clarke in 2015’s
Terminator Genisys
and Lena Headey in the 2008 TV series
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicle
s.

While it is not yet clear what role Hamilton will be playing in Stranger Things season 5, her character has been described as a series regular, indicating her presence will likely play an important part in the unfolding drama. Given Hamilton’s prior experience as one of cinema’s most iconic action heroines, with any luck, the Duffer brothers will provide her with plenty of opportunities to flex her action bona fides against the threats posed by Vecna and the Upside Down.
