A number of social media users have shared their favourite locations to visit in The Netherlands, with many offering spectacular views and culture but no tourists.
Many Brits enjoy a trip to flat European country, with most taking a city break in the capital of Amsterdam for its canals, history, and laid-back attitude.
However, posting to the Reddit group r/solotravel, the user @liaje noted that she is thinking about travelling to one of the country’s more hidden areas.
She explained: “I recently moved to Amsterdam and love travelling around the country on my own whenever I have time. Do you have tips and suggestions for places, especially less well-known ones, that are a must-see or just worth visiting in general.
“I’m interested in seeing scenic areas, good party spots and experiencing different parts of Dutch culture. My budget is low, basically as low as possible, I would only be paying for the train/bus tickets and some food and drinks.”
A number of Reddit users recommended that tourists take a trip to Haarlem, a city around 12 miles west of Amsterdam.
The city has plenty of history, with the oldest mentions of it dating back to the 10th century. As a result, there are plenty of museums and walking tours showing Haarlem’s background.
It also has several great locations for scenic walks, such as Haarlemmerhout, the oldest park in The Netherlands which is home to wild deer.
Another member of the group suggested visiting Den Bosch, also referred to as ‘s-Hertogenbosch, which is located towards the south of the country.
One of the most famous attractions in Den Bosch is the Gothic St Janskathedraal, a cathedral built between 1220 and 1340 with distinctive Romanesque architecture.
The city is also home to the Jheronimus Bosch Art Centre, which showcases the artwork of perhaps Den Bosch’s most famous inhabitant.
Finally, another social media user noted that visitors looking for some peace and quiet take a trip to Texel, an island right at the top of the country.
With a population of under 14,000, Texel has plenty of sandbanks that attract a variety of wild animals such as birds and seals.
Despite its small size, there are plenty of hotels and cottages to rent, making it a nice spot for a short break in the fresh air.
