Ryan Gosling Screams At Greta Gerwig’s Barbie Snub In Oscars Promo

Summary

  • Barbie
‘s success at the Oscars has been overshadowed by the snubs of Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie.
  • The Oscars have embraced the discourse by creating a promotional video with Ryan Gosling reacting to Gerwig’s snub.
  • Despite the snubs,
    Barbie
received eight nominations, with its stunning production designs and original songs standing out as strong contenders.

Barbie‘s Ryan Gosling reacts to Greta Gerwig’s Best Director snub in a new promotional video for the 96th Academy Awards. Despite Barbie‘s extensive critical and commercial success, Gerwig was snubbed for Best Director and Margot Robbie was snubbed for Best Actress in a Leading Role. This has dominated much of the discourse leading up to the Oscars, a development that feels particularly ironic and similar to the movie’s plot, with Gerwig and Robbie being overlooked while Ryan Gosling received a nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

In the Oscars’ first promotional video, shown during Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Gosling learns of Gerwig’s snub and reacts with horrified screams alongside Kimmel, who will be hosting the the ceremony. Check out the video below:

Instead of ignoring the discourse, the Oscars have seemingly decided to fully lean into it as part of their promotion. In addition to Gosling, the video features Barbie cast members Kate McKinnon reprising her role as Weird Barbie, the Oscar-nominated America Ferrera delivering a monologue parodying her iconic speech from the film, narration from Helen Mirren, and a Barbieland filled with references to the other Best Picture nominees.

Will Barbie Win Any Oscars?

Despite Gerwig and Robbie’s much-publicized snubs, Barbie still received eight total Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, a Best Actress in a Supporting Role nod for Ferrera, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It also received two nominations for Best Original Song, with “What Was I Made For?” and “I’m Just Ken” being recognized. With Oppenheimer as the favorite for Best Picture, and with ten total nominees in that category, Barbie winning would be a surprise, although the film already has a reputation for defying expectations.

Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer) and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers) are the favorites in the supporting actor and actress categories. Gosling even acknowledges in the promotional video that he is unlikely to win. Ferrera’s deserving nomination has, unfortunately, not garnered as much discussion as Gerwig and Robbie’s Barbie snubs, and she could be a surprise victor, especially if Randolph doesn’t win. Gerwig’s movie is more likely to win its five other nominations. Barbie easily had some of the most stunning production designs in 2023, particularly in how the setting of Barbieland was gorgeously brought to life.

The same can be said for the costume designs worn by the various Barbies and Kens, along with Allan, Midge, and the characters in the real world. With two nominations for Best Original Song, Barbie has the best odds of winning in that category, with both songs having gained significant cultural relevance. Unlike the other Best Adapted Screenplay nominees, Barbie is not directly adapted from any source material and is only adapted from the existing toys, but that could make it stand out from its competition.
