West Yorkshire Victorian village is Unesco Gem and must-visit spot for award-winning beers | Travel News | Travel

Saltaire is a picturesque village located in the metropolitan borough of Bradford in West Yorkshire, England.

It was built in the mid-19th century by Sir Titus Salt, a textile magnate, as a model village for the workers of his nearby textile mill.

The village was built between 1851 and 1872 and was named after its founder, combining “Salt” with “aire,” which is a suffix commonly used in West Yorkshire to denote a river.

Saltaire is renowned for its well-preserved Victorian architecture, which includes rows of neat stone houses, a grand Italianate-style church, and public buildings such as the Victoria Hall and the Institute.

These structures were designed by prominent architects of the time and reflect the ethos of the Victorian era.

Designed by architects Lockwood and Mawson in the Italianate style, this church is a prominent landmark in Saltaire thanks to its ornate interior and stained glass windows.

In 2001, Saltaire was designated as a Unesco World Heritage site in recognition of its significance as an outstanding example of 19th-century industrial development and urban planning.

It is considered one of the best-preserved model villages in the world and attracts visitors interested in its history, architecture, and cultural heritage.

Today, Saltaire remains a vibrant community, with its historic buildings repurposed for modern use, including shops, galleries, cafes, and residences.

The village also hosts various events and festivals throughout the year, celebrating its heritage and attracting tourists from far and wide.

Held annually, the Saltaire Festival celebrates the village’s heritage with a diverse program of events, including art exhibitions, music performances, guided walks, and family-friendly activities.

Saltaire has also gained renown for its exceptional beer offerings, boasting numerous award-winning brews.

Among them, the Triple Choc clinched gold at the World Beer Awards, while both the Helles and Northern Light secured top honours at the SIBA North East Regional awards.
