What Happened To Every Hunger Games Tribute Who Survived Catching Fire’s Quarter Quell

This list contains discussions of torture and suicide.

Summary

  • The rebels’ plan involved saving Katniss and Peeta from the Capitol, with the help of several other victors.
  • Katniss agrees to become the Mockingjay on the condition that the other victors are rescued and granted pardons.
  • Finnick, Johanna, and Beetee are all involved in the rebels’ plan, but not all of them survive until the end of the series.

Catching Fire, the second installment in The Hunger Games Saga, delivers the shocking twist that the previous victors of the Hunger Games will be forced back into the arena for the Quarter Quell: Out of 24 tributes, only six victors survive. The Hunger Games is intended to only have one victor, but the Capitol wasn’t counting on a widespread conspiracy to rescue Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) from the arena at any cost. While District 13 planned to rescue everyone they could along with the District 12 victors, most of the tributes still perished.

Among the victors involved with the rebels’ plan are Finnick Odair (Sam Claflin) Johanna Mason (Jena Malone) and Beetee Letiar (Jeffrey Wright). While Katniss and Peeta are angry that they were not informed of the plan, the fact that these victors played a role in it established them as people who could be trusted. All three become friends of Katniss following the Quarter Quell, if in very different ways. However, out of the few victors who survive the Quarter Quell, not all of them live to the end of the series.

In Hunger Games: Catching Fire, President Snow hoped Katniss would go down in the Quarter Quell. However, she had some allies working to save her.

6 Katniss Everdeen

Katniss Was Saved By The Rebels

After being rescued from the arena, Katniss is brought to District 13 along with her family. Katniss is still angry with the others, particularly her mentor Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson). However, President Coin (Julianne Moore) of District 13 and other authority figures begin to pressure Katniss to become the Mockingjay, the symbolic figurehead of the rebellion. Katniss eventually agrees to this on the condition that the other victors are rescued from the Capitol as soon as possible and given full pardons for any information they reveal under torture.

Katniss stepping into this role marks a turning point in the series where she begins consciously trying to navigate the politics of the rebellion rather than just surviving it. Commander Boggs (Mahershala Ali) explains that Coin sees Katniss as a threat because she could turn people against Coin after the war. This ends in tragedy when Coin orchestrates the death of Katniss’ sister Prim (Willow Shields) to push Katniss over to her side. Katniss eventually retires from the military and politics and returns to District 12. She finds a sense of peace there and marries and has children with Peeta.

5 Peeta Mellark

Peeta Was Taken By The Capitol

In the chaos of Katniss destroying the arena, Peeta is captured by the Capitol along with Johanna and Enobaria (Meta Golding). He is tortured for months before District 13 formulates a plan to rescue them all. By that time, the Capitol has used tracker jacker venom to alter Peeta’s memories, causing him to see Katniss as a threat. He tries to strangle Katniss when they initially reunite. Peeta goes through a long recovery process and eventually regains his old personality.

Peeta is prematurely discharged by Coin and sent to the Capitol to become a part of the Star Squad, along with Katniss and Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth). He stays behind when Katniss and Gale go to President Snow’s mansion. Peeta also stops Katniss from committing suicide after she assassinates Coin. This moment actually demonstrates Peeta becoming who he was before: a person who truly cares about Katniss and always believes things will improve. Peeta then returns to District 12, where he and Katniss resume (or begin) their relationship because they can heal together.

4 Finnick Odair

Finnick Reunited With Annie

Finnick is rescued with Katniss from the arena but learns shortly afterward that the Capitol has taken his partner Annie Cresta (Stef Dawson) from District 4. Finnick and Katniss both struggle in the following months while Annie and Peeta are held captive and lean on each other for support. Finnick and Katniss’ friendship is abridged in the movies from what it is in the books, where they both move past their initial misgivings about each other as they get to know one another.

Finnick is reunited with Annie after District 13’s rescue mission, and they are married soon after. Shortly after their marriage, Finnick joins Katniss and the others in the final assault on the Capitol. He is killed by the Capitol’s lizard mutts as the Star Squad makes its way towards the president’s mansion. Annie vouches for Finnick at the final meeting among the remaining victors, saying that he would not want there to be another Hunger Games. Annie gives birth to Finnick’s son sometime after the war.

3 Johanna Mason

Johanna Was Tortured By The Capitol

Johanna is taken by the Capitol along with Peeta in the aftermath of the Quarter Quell. As the only captured victor who was aware of the rebel plan, she is severely tortured for information. She is then rescued with Peeta and Annie. After this, Johanna’s story changes significantly from what it is in the books.Johanna and Katniss develop a kind of candid friendship, and Johanna wishes Katniss luck on her mission to kill President Snow (Donald Sutherland). However, the books further explore Johanna’s trauma after being held captive and develop her relationship with Katniss more.

Johanna and Katniss become roommates when District 13 refuses to discharge Johanna from the hospital if she has no one to live with Johanna wants to come to the Capitol with Katniss but has a flashback of being tortured during a training exercise and is hospitalized again. Katniss comforts Johanna before she leaves and promises to kill Snow. In both the Mockingjay movie and book, Johanna and Katniss reunite at the victors’ meeting, where they both vote in favor of holding a final Hunger Games with Capitol children.

2 Beetee Letiar

Beetee Survived His Injuries In District 13

Beetee and his district partner Wiress (Amanda Plummer) are among the few victors Katniss feels she can trust. Wiress is killed by one of the career tributes during the Games. Beetee is instrumental in the rebels’ plan to free Katniss and Peeta, arranging the wire that will conduct a lightning strike and destroy the force field around the arena. However, he is severely electrocuted in the process. He is recused with Katniss and Finnick and treated by District 13’s doctors. Beetee recovers from his injuries, but still uses a wheelchair (it is not clear if he ever regains the ability to walk).

As an expert electrical engineer, Beetee develops weapons in District 13 during the war. He is called to the victors’ meeting in Mockingjay Part 2’s ending and votes against another Hunger Games. Beetee is kind and logical and believes that another Hunger Games is not what humanity needs going forward, while Katniss and Johanna are more vengeful. It is assumed that Beetee returns to District 3 and continues to work in electronics after the series’ conclusion.

1 Enobaria

Enobaria Was Taken By The Capitol But Was Freed

Enobaria in the Hunger Games

Enobaria is one of the career tributes during the Quarter Quell since she is from District 2. Her district partner Brutus (Bruno Gunn) is killed by Peeta, and she is taken by the Capitol after the arena’s destruction. However, at this point, District 2 was still on the Capitol’s side in the war, and Enobaria was not a part of the rebels’ plan. Therefore, District 13 believed that the Capitol had released Enobaria to return to District 2.

Enobaria reappears at the victors’ meeting. She votes in favor of another Hunger Games, which is somewhat surprising given District 2’s history of eagerly participating in the Games. However, her decision can be interpreted as demonstrating how all the victors were inherently harmed by the Capitol in The Hunger Games Saga.
