More often than not, Tom Schwartz’s subpar nuances have flown below the radar on Vanderpump Rules thanks to his best friend Tom Sandoval’s even worse behavior. But now that the TomTom owners are taking a break from one another and their extremely odd co-dependent relationship, Schwartzy’s become a front-runner for being low-key terrible. If I self-reflect, I think I have to admit to myself that Tom Schwartz has honestly always been the worst. Tom, for me, is the epitome of model behavior, and I don’t mean that as a compliment.
He is self-indulgent, spoiled, and genuinely thinks the earth revolves around him. While I used to think Tom was lazy AF, I’ve recently changed my mind. He is conniving, and his “I don’t remember” is the lamest, most cowardly excuse ever.
Tom the Bad Boyfriend
Whether you know him as Tom Schwartz, Schwartz, or Bubba, we can all agree he was never a good boyfriend/fiancé/husband to Katie Maloney. Even though Tom wasn’t an actual cast member of Vanderpump Rules when the series aired in 2013, he became a sidekick rather quickly. After being given a full-time membership in 2014, fans have only seen him acting at his worst. To be honest, the entire cast treated Katie poorly, often overlooking her opinions.
Again, Tom was the low-key worst offender as he never defended her against Jax Taylor or Tom Sandoval’s verbal attacks. Even as late as Season 10 showed that no one took Katie’s side in the breakup as Tom ever so slightly gaslit her. Katie was pretty loyal, and I’d have to say everyone on the show did her dirty, but not as badly as her lover. Without a doubt, Tom started out his bad behavior during Season 2 when he poured an entire drink over Katie while in Mexico. The disrespect is unreal!
Schwartz Blindly Follows Sandoval
For years, we’ve all noticed how Schwartzy became a little sidekick to the menace that is Sandoval. But after doing a bit of a binge, it occurred to me that Schwartz has always been up Sandy’s butt. Picture it: Season 2. James Kennedy and Sandy are in a fight with the DJ, yelling, “Go take a Honda Civic selfie!” Feeling the need to involve himself, Schwartz comes like a bat out of hell to defend his bestie. As he is throwing air-punched, he yells, “Come back up here, you little bit*h!” Like, what in the world was going on? The fight had nothing to do with him. He had no skin in the game!
Tom the Cheater
I feel like Vanderpump Rules viewers forget that Tom is an admitted cheater. He didn’t just step out once but multiple times. And these are just the affairs he admitted to the Bravo cameras. Tom’s cheating was the subject of multiple seasons (Seasons 3 and 6 stand out.) But perhaps the worst trait is that he revealed he would never out his friends for cheating. It’s a clear pattern for Schwartzy, who knew about Jax sleeping with Faith Stowers and Sandy sleeping with Rachel Leviss. What a cad.
Why Isn’t Tom Called Out?
It is infuriating that Tom is never, ever called out. Why is that? I think the main crux is that Sandy was just a bit worse, so Schwartz could hide and slither around in the shadows. For seasons Tom has endlessly done sh*tty things, and I think a big part of why he was never called out was because he knew how to pivot the discussion quickly. Tom has managed to convince just about everyone who meets him that he’s just an adorable, hopeless man who never means to do anything cruel or hurtful but who just makes charmingly silly mistakes all the time.
Now that Tom is past 40, his terrible behavior is finally starting to wear thin, and it feels like his inner orbit is wising up to the fact that he is a man child who will never really take responsibility. Can I say it? I think I hate Tom Schwartz.
