Kathy Hochul’s ban on long guns for National Guard troops in the NYC subway

Oops: Just days after sending 750 National Guard members into the subway system, Gov. Hochul banned the soldiers from carrying rifles while overseeing bag checks.

She should’ve stuck with her long guns, rather than side with those eroding her authority by moaning about them.

Instead, the gov comes off looking lame — again.

This, when she’s already given up on fighting the progressive Democrats who really are driving up crime, whether it’s Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg or the state legislators who refuse to fix their botched criminal-justice “reforms.”

No, muscling the Legislature isn’t easy: After all, her much-feared, oh-so-macho predecessor, then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo, signed those reforms into law.

And Hochul is now pushing for other laws that could help make the subways safer, by making it easier to involuntarily commit the dangerously mentally ill.

But we fear the Legislature will tell her to “talk to the hand” on that, too.

Yet every day brings a new horror story about violence and mayhem in the subway — not to mention the streets.

If she’s to deliver on public safety, Hochul’s going to have to quit retreating every time her critics whinge.
