Marvel Star Karen Gillan Is Seriously Down for the Willy Wonka Horror Movie

Summary

  • Karen Gillan expresses excitement to star in a Willy Wonka Experience spinoff about The Unknown villain.
  • A horror movie based on The Unknown, set in Scotland, is already in the works by Kaledonia Pictures.
  • Gillan also discussed her experience learning and performing with an American accent.

In an exclusive interview with MovieWeb, Marvel star Karen Gillan responded with excitement to the idea of starring in a movie about the recent, viral Willy Wonka Experience disaster. A spinoff centered on the villainous character The Unknown is now in development, and Gillan said she loved the idea and would “take any role” offered to her.

“Amazing. Yeah. Give me The Unknown spin off immediately.

I would take any role, to be honest. And it’s set in Scotland so I can play almost any of them. But yeah, I would be a cheeky Oompa Loompa, or The Unknown, I would be very happy with either of those.”

This is not the first time that Gillan has commented on starring in an adaptation of the Willy Wonka Experience, which saw patrons pay £35 (around $44) per ticket before arriving at an abandoned warehouse containing a handful of Wonka-esque statues, some AI-created artwork, and a group of actors doing their best with some seriously shoddy material.

A horror movie based on the (entirely made up and not at all affiliated with Roald Dahl or his works) villain The Unknown is already in the works from the Scotland-based film production company Kaledonia Pictures. The movie is aiming for a release later this year, and follows “a renowned illustrator and his wife who are haunted by the tragic death of their son, Charlie. Desperate to escape their grief, the couple leave the world behind for the remote Scottish Highlands – where an unknowable evil awaits them.”

No doubt the studio is now frantically trying to get in touch with Karen Gillan’s people.

During the interview, Gillan also explained how she learned to speak with an American accent, which is very different from how she talks.

“It doesn’t remain a challenge. It definitely was a challenge at the beginning though. Well, I thought it was easy at the beginning until I realized that I wasn’t as good as I thought I was. And then I needed to work, and it was a challenge. But actually, the first film that I did in an American accent was this film called Oculus, which is a horror film by Mike Flanagan, and I had a 10 minute monologue that I had to do all in one take, which you wouldn’t know from watching it because it’s edited. But in real life, I did it all together. So that, I feel like I must have covered most of the words in the dictionary in the American accent in just that monologue alone. It was a good training for me.”
