Our Flag Means Death creator David Jenkins confirms the cancellation of the Max period romantic comedy. Starring Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi, Our Flag Means Death chronicles the adventures of Stede Bonnet, a wealthy land-owner turned pirate, and his eventual encounter with the infamous Blackbeard. Following its premiere in 2022, the show quickly garnered a cult following. However, after two seasons, Max announced that Our Flag Means Death will not return for season 3.

Our Flag Means Death creator David Jenkins took to Instagram to confirm that the show was truly ending, revealing that they found no alternative home for it.

The creator posted a couple of BTS photos from the show’s production while also acknowledging the fan campaigns to save Our Flag Means Death, adding that it helped those who worked on the show deal with its loss a little better.

Why Was Our Flag Means Death Canceled After Three Seasons?

Our Flag Means Death quickly garnered acclaim and endeared itself to audiences for its riveting plotlines and likable characters, but more peculiarly to the queer community who championed the show for its adequate LGBTQ+ representation and sidestepping common tropes. The news of the cancellation came as a shock to many who were fully invested in the show’s captivating romance storylines that had been brewing across its first two seasons.

After much speculation as to why HBO’s streaming service decided to pull the plug on Our Flag Means Death, and the various fan petitions to save the show, HBO and Max chief executive Casey Bloys recently revealed that while it was not an easy decision to end the show, the streaming numbers weren’t enough to continue production.
