Harvey Guillén has addressed Disney’s progression in diversity, and would love to see the next Disney Princess be queer. Best known for his appearance in the cult comedy series What We Do in the Shadows, Guillén recently lent his voice to the character of Gabo in Disney’s Wish, and he feels that when it comes to representation, the House of Mouse has come a long way, but can go further.

Guillén’s comments come at a time when Disney is increasingly recognized for its efforts to diversify its character roster, reflecting a wider spectrum of identities than ever in their history. The actor praised Wish as one of a new generation of “inspirational” movies for modern audiences. Speaking with ComicBook.com, he shared his feelings about where Disney is currently on their own journey, and when he would like to see them go next. He said:
“I think they’re making strides in the right direction. I think it’s hard to rebuild a wheel that’s already been in motion for a while, and it’s hard to think of a new direction, especially in where we’re at with the world, but they’re putting their best foot forward, I think. And sometimes those things take time and I’m optimistic. And like you said, if a queer princess comes along, that’d be fantastic.
“And I think that we are in the lifespan of that potentially happening. And that could be a reality. It’s just, like I said, it takes time with stuff like that. Representation has taken so long just in film in general with every studio and every company. And so it’s taken us this far to come this far but look how far we’ve gotten.”
Wish is Heading to 4K UHD This Month
Disney’s 100th anniversary celebrations included the release of the movie Wish in cinemas last year. Despite an elaborate marketing campaign and the fact the movie was marking an impressive milestone in the company’s history, Wish did not make the big splash that everyone hoped for on its cinematic debut. Opening with a worldwide gross of $63.9 million, the film ended its theatrical run on $252.5 million – almost half that of Pixar’s Elemental which was released earlier in the year.
After making a shift to Disney+ in February, fans of Wish will now have the chance to own the movie on physical media as it comes to 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on March 12. Recently, physical media has gained a kind of resurgence as many streamers, including Disney, have proven that at any time they can purge content from their platforms. Whether this will help Wish on its way to a strong showing on its latest release.
Exclusive: Harvey Guillén Talks Disney’s Wish and What We Do in the Shadows’ Final Season
Harvey Guillén talks about the upcoming home media release of Wish, the final season of What We Do in the Shadows, and voice acting.
Disney’s journey towards full inclusivity is far from over, even though the studio – along with others – has seen its fair share of pushback on social media from those not onboard with the changes that have been seen across the industry. As the House of Mouse continues to expand its on screen representation, it is clear that there is still a long way to go before the transition is over.
Wish
is available to stream on Disney+, and comes to 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on March 12.
