Ke Huy Quan Wants To Get Out Of His Comfort Zone & Play A Very Specific Type Of Role

Ke Huy Quan reveals a different type of character he wants to play. Quan made his film debut as Short Round in 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. His child stardom continued the following year with the role of Data in The Goonies. His early success did not lead to many opportunities in the following years, which resulted in a 19-year break from acting. That changed with Ke Huy Quan’s best movie, Everything Everywhere All at Once, as he won an Academy Award for his performance and went on to be cast in many projects.

While speaking with Empire magazine about his career and his upcoming action comedy film, Love Hurts, Quan shared that he wants to play a villain. He discussed how he would specifically like to play a diabolical James Bond villain. Using Hugh Grant’s performance in Heretic as a reference, Quan also explained how he would like to step out of his comfort zone and play an antagonistic character. Check out Quan’s comments below:

I would love to play a bad guy. Like a Bond villain. Or the kind of thing Hugh Grant does in Heretic. I want to go out of my comfort zone and just play this diabolical, really bad guy. That would be a lot of fun.

Playing A Villain Would Be The Perfect Next Step In His Career

The resurgence of Quan’s career has been one of the entertainment industry’s best stories in recent years. Everything Everywhere All at Once is already one of the best movies of the 2020s, largely due to Quan’s performance, and he steals the show in Loki season 2, American Born Chinese, and every recent project he has starred in. Quan no longer has to feel as if he is settling for a role as he now has many opportunities and can continue expanding his repertoire.

It would be exciting to see him play a villainous role in the future. While a movie or television series could announce in advance that Quan has been cast as a villain, it could also be rewarding to see him play a surprise antagonist. With audiences used to seeing him play heroic and likable characters, it could be genuinely surprising to see him be a villain, especially if this is concealed during the marketing and throughout much of the story.

He Should Be Part Of The James Bond Franchise’s Next Era

It would be fun to see Quan play any type of villain, but his comments make me particularly eager to see him as a James Bond villain. With the franchise in the process of rebooting itself after Daniel Craig’s exit, it is the perfect opportunity to cast Quan as a villain who will help launch the franchise’s next era. Ke Huy Quan getting more roles is wonderful, and a next great step will be him getting cast in more parts that are distinct from what he has already done.
