Madonna tested out some new material at the Comedy Cellar in New York City this week, surprising the crowd with a stand-up set while in attendance with friend Amy Schumer.
One blurry photo from the evening shows the superstar standing up on the famed venue’s tiny stage while reading jokes from a notebook on a stool placed in front of her, looking laid-back in a simple black outfit and fingerless gloves. The Trainwreck star also shared a selfie with Madge at the club on Instagram, showing the two women sitting at a table reserved with a sign that reads, “Comedy Cellar comedians only.”
The “Like a Virgin” singer previously participated in a Comedy Cellar showcase with Schumer in 2017, and has also demonstrated her comedy chops on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. After calling herself a “closeted comedian” on the talk show in 2015, Madonna gave a three-minute stand-up set for Fallon’s audience in which she joked about her affinity for dating “younger men” and her collection of Andy Warhol paintings.
Madonna’s comedy outing comes about eight months after she wrapped her Celebration Tour — during which she was playing venues much bigger than the 1500-cap Comedy Cellar. Since the trek, she’s been working on developing a biopic about her own life and career.
Shortly before the new year, Madonna — who hasn’t released a proper album since 2019’s Madame X — also revealed that she was working on new music with her ongtime producer Stuart Price. “these past few months has been medicine for my SOUL,” she said at the time, sharing a video of herself and Price in the studio.
