The African city where summer 2025 flight searches have skyrocketed | World | News

A city in Africa has seen a huge increase in searches as it is revealed as one of the most trending destinations for 2025.

Data has suggested that Brits are longing for big adventures and long-haul holidays this summer.

Travel experts at KAYAK analysed flight searches on the site, and discovered that eight of the top ten trending travel destinations for summer 2025 are located outside of Europe.

Zimbabwe took the top spot, with flight searches to its capital, Harare, seeing a 93% increase year on year.

Also on the list is Johannesburg in South Africa. The city saw a 62% increase.

The average return economy flight price is £767.

KAYAK hints that Brits are keen to surf in South Africa.

Surfing Waves says that the country “cops plenty of swell” from antarctic lows and is surrounded by the ocean on three sides.

This makes for “huge surfing possibilities”. The site adds: “This coastline is swept by two major ocean currents, the warm south-flowing Mozambique-Agulhas Current and the cold Benguela, and every coast is pounded by surf throughout the year.

“There are so many world class surf spots it is just not funny. The surfing world got its first taste in the Endless Summer movie, now South African waves feature on websites and surf magazines the world over.”

Experts do warn, however: “Watch out for Sharks!”

Johannesburg, itself is South Africa’s biggest city with a population of more than 8million people.

It began as a 19th century gold-mining settlement, before growing. The city was once home to Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, and the former’s previous residence is now the Mandela House museum.

Other museums focus on the struggle to end Apartheid.

Expedia advises visiting Johannesburg’s cultural districts of Newtown and Braamfontein, which offer theatres, “swanky” bars, inviting restaurants, “charming” cafes.

The site adds: “The inner city may have been once a tourist no-go zone but today is one of the city’s many calling cards for visitors.

“Take a stroll around Maboneng, on the eastern fringes of the inner city, to witness a hip, urban neighbourhood that will seduce any doubter and win them over to Jozi’s charms.”
