Guardians of the Galaxy and Dune star Dave Bautista
is still fighting to play the role of Marcus Fenix in the long-awaited adaptation of the video game Gears of War
. In fact, so determined is the action star to lead the project (which is currently in development at Netflix) that he has asked fans to start an online campaign. And, if that were not already enough to convince you of his passion for the part, the actor has also revealed to Comicbook.com that he has started bugging Netflix himself.
“Start an online thing about freaking Gears of War. Come on, Netflix. Come on already. It’s not like I’m not badgering them. Come on, Netflix. Get it together.”
Created by Epic Games, developed and managed by The Coalition, and owned and published by Xbox Game Studios, Gears of War is a hugely successful third-person shooter that focuses on the conflict between humanity and the subterranean reptilian hominids known as the Locust Horde. Featuring large men battling even larger monsters, Gears of War has since become one of the best-selling franchises for the Xbox 360, with fans having waited a long, long time for the grim and gritty action to make the transition from pixels to live-action.

Dave Bautista has been campaigning for the role of Marcus Fenix in a Gears of War movie for some time, with the actor saying in 2023 that he really hopes “they will (call me). It’s a part that I’ve sought after for years and I feel like I could bring a lot of heart to Marcus Fenix. I really would. I think I would do that part justice. I feel confident in it, so hopefully it’ll come my way and we’ll be having this conversation in a different way sometime.”
Even the creator behind the Gears of War franchise, Cliff Bleszinski, wants to see Dave Bautista lead the adaptation. Taking to social media back in 2022, Bleszinski revealed his hopes for Bautista to join forces with Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds as main characters Marcus and Baird, respectively. However, at the time, he also stated that he does not want Bautista to reunite with his Guardians of the Galaxy co-star Chris Pratt, saying, “Oh and keep Chris Pratt away from the Gears franchise, please, FFS.” Netflix, take note.

After years of waiting, Gears of War fans’ patience has paid off, with Netflix having now announced that a movie based on the video game is now in development, with Dune and Dune: Part Two co-writer Jon Spaihts penning the screenplay. “Gears of War was released 16 years ago today and to mark the occasion, Netflix has partnered with The Coalition to adapt the Gears of War video game saga into a live-action feature film, followed by an adult animated series — with the potential for more stories to follow!” the streamer said in a statement.
