The aviation industry reportedly had its deadliest year in 2024, though the amount of plane crashes, midair collisions and other incidents so far in 2025 have shaken the American public. Since January, horrified travelers have witnessed a collision between a Black Hawk and a commercial plane, a medical jet crash and, most recently, an upside down crash landing by a commercial aircraft. So, many are assuming that 2025 is the worst year to fly, but how many plane crashes and other aviation incidents happened in 2024?

Keep reading to find out how many plane crashes took place in 2024 and how many have happened so far in 2025.

How Many Plane Crashes Have There Been in 2025?

There have been more than 15 plane crashes and collisions among commercial and non-commercial planes so far in 2025, according to the Federal Aviation Administration‘s “Statements on Aviation Accidents and Incidents.”

How Many Plane Crashes Were There in 2024?

The number of aviation incidents in 2024 involved crashes, collisions and other issues. According to Forbes, there were about 30 aviation incidents in 2024 with more than 400 fatalities as a result. This made 2024 the deadliest year in commercial flights since 2018.

Why Are Planes Crashing So Much?

It certainly seems that there have been more plane crashes and collisions in 2025 than ever before. However, that is not true, according to past data. Since the 1970s, the number of fatalities and aviation incidents have both decreased over time, as seen via the Bureau of Aircraft Accidents Archives.

Aviation safety expert Anthony Brickhouse told CNN in January 2025 that travelers are still “safer in your flight than you were driving in your car to the airport … statically speaking. Air travel remains the safest mode of transportation. And in safety, we identify trends … something that happens over and over again. And in the safety world, if you keep having near-misses, eventually you’re going to have a midair (collision).”

Nevertheless, Brickhouse acknowledged that “it’s important for the flying public to be vocal and demand that the government and the different entities do everything possible to make air travel as safe as possible.”

Is it Safe to Fly Anymore?

Yes, experts insist that it’s still safe to fly in a commercial and a non-commercial plane. According to a 2024 study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, one individual’s chance of dying in a plane incident is 1 in 13.7 million, per TIME.

However, since January 2025, the American public has grown weary over flying.
