Once again, Chris Coelen is working overtime to defend Love Is Blind’s casting choices. The creator of the hit Netflix show has gone to bat for his program in the past after being criticized for casting unsavory characters with criminal backgrounds. This time, he’s defending Season 8 for the lack of diversity across the cast. According to him, it wasn’t intentional.
Chris Coelen says Love Is Blind “casts itself”
According to a report from Us Weekly, Season 8 of Love is Blind is statistically the whitest season Netflix has ever released. In past seasons, around half of the participants were people of color. Season 8 was roughly 30 percent.
In response to those facts, Chris said that the show “casts itself.” Basically, he’s saying that there’s no one specific to blame for the lack of color in Season 8, which took place in Minnesota.
“If you’re sort of trying to tick a box, there were lots of people who were in the group coming into the pods who ultimately just didn’t find their person and who we didn’t choose to [follow],” Chris explained.
Chris explained that the most compelling storylines are the ones that make the final cut. Apparently, that’s why the producers spent so much time showing us Madison Errichiello and Alex Brown’s weird little love triangle. Or was it a love square? Either way, Chris defended the show’s choices like his life depended on it.
He continued, “There are 32 stories times however many people each person dates. So if each person starts off dating 16 people, do the math, that’s, I don’t know, close to 1,000 stories? Something like that. And you can only tell so many of them.”
Ultimately, Chris said their main goal when they “seed the pods” is trying to create potential matches. Having people from different backgrounds isn’t the biggest part of the equation.
“You’re less concerned about that, to be honest, than just trying to have a group of people that you hope are somewhat compatible and then seeing what happens,” Chris explained.
Love is Blind Season 8 is streaming on Netflix.
