Owen Wilson Sports Comedy ‘Stick’ Gets a First Look

Owen Wilson is taking to the golf course for the upcoming sports comedy Stick, which has received a first-look ahead of its June 4 release on Apple TV+. The streaming service is teeing the series up for a debut that will see three episodes drop at once, followed by one new episode every Wednesday until the 10th and final episode releases on July 23.

The images (seen below) reveal Wilson’s character, Pryce Cahill, “an over-the-hill, ex-pro golfer” whose career “derailed prematurely 20 years ago” (per Apple TV+). In the show, he returns to the green to mentor Santi, “a troubled 17-year-old golf phenom,” played by Peter Dager. According to the show’s official synopsis, Cahill’s mentorship role comes at a turbulent time in his life as his marriage has broken down, and he also now finds himself unemployed after being fired from his job at an Indiana sporting goods store.

In addition to Wilson and Dager, Stick also stars Marc Maron (GLOW), Mariana Treviño (A Man Called Otto), Lilli Kay (Yellowstone), Judy Greer (Jurassic World), and Timothy Olyphant (Justified), and features guest appearances from golfing legends such as Collin Morikawa, Keegan Bradley, Max Homa, and Wyndham Clark. Additional cameos include broadcasters Jim Nantz and Trevor Immelman, Good Good’s Matt Scharff, Brad Dalke, Garrett Clark, and Dan Rapaport.

Owen Wilson Is Taking a Swing at Another Comedic Role

As a comedic actor, Wilson has schmoozed his way around marriage ceremony after-parties in Wedding Crashers, taken to the streets as an easy-going detective in Starsky & Hutch, and turned heads as a world-famous model in Zoolander and its 2016 sequel. Unlike its predecessor, Zoolander 2 was a critical and commercial failure. He has since spent the majority of his time on superhero television (Secret Agent, Loki), some romance duds (Bliss, Marry Me), and a couple of small attempts at comedy (Paint, Father Figures), but hasn’t had a big comedy hit in some time.

From Wedding Crashers to Zoolander, these are Owen Wilson’s best comedy movies.

Stick not only marks a new comedy entry for Wilson, but is also his latest major TV role after starring as Mobius M. Mobius in Marvel Studios’ Loki for two seasons. The MCU series hasn’t yet received a third season renewal (although, according to Marvel Television boss Brad Winderbaum, “there’s always a chance”), allowing Wilson to take on new projects and tap into different genres once again.

Wilson is likely hoping to score a hole-in-one with Stick, as he is an executive producer on the series in addition to his starring role. Other executive producers include the show’s creator and showrunner, Jason Keller, plus Ben Silverman, Guymon Casady, Howard T. Owens, Rodney Ferrell, Drew Buckley, Lee Eisenberg, Natalie Sandy, Christopher Moynihan, Bill Callahan, Valerie Faris, and Jonathan Dayton.
