Rob Lowe, one of the original members of the iconic “Brat Pack” group of young stars who rose to fame in the 1980s, recently gave a surprising update on the potential for a sequel to the classic 1985 movie. The film in question is none other than St. Elmo’s Fire, a quintessential Brat Pack movie that starred Lowe alongside actors like Demi Moore, Emilio Estevez, Andrew McCarthy, and Ally Sheedy. It centered around a group of friends that navigate the treacherous transition from college to adulthood. Nearly four decades after the original film’s release, Lowe has revealed that he’s actively exploring the idea of starring in St. Elmo’s Fire 2.
During a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Lowe was on hand to promote his new game show, The Floor. Although the primary focus was on his game show, the conversation naturally steered towards a variety of topics, including St. Elmo’s Fire 2. The actor confirmed that he and Demi Moore, who is a major contender for Best Actress Oscars this year for her phenomenal turn in The Substance, are actively working together on the sequel. “We’re putting together St. Elmo’s Fire 2. So we’re back working together… I’m dead [serious.] Yes. We’re gonna see what those people are doing at our ages now. This is a real thing.
I know. It’s great. It sounds like it could be a bit, but [you’d] also go “wait a minute, I’d see that.” When we did the original, we were on the cover of Rolling Stone. Now we’ll be on the cover of AARP, but it’s still gonna be great.”
No “Brat Pack” Movie Has Ever Gotten A Sequel Before
The “Brat Pack” movies emerged in the 1980s and took little time to capture the angst and aspirations of a generation. They featured a recurring group of young actors at defining moments in their careers; they often played teenagers and young adults transitioning from one phase of life into another and navigating love and friendships along the way. Some of the most iconic Brat Pack films includeThe Breakfast Club,Sixteen Candles, andPretty in Pink. These movies grew in popularity because oftheir relatability and aesthetic. But despite the cultural significance, none of these classics ever received a sequel.

The idea of a St. Elmo’s Fire 2 is particularly intriguing, as it would mark the first time a Brat Pack movie gets a sequel. These movies have become so deeply ingrained in the consciousness of a certain generation that the mere thought of revisiting the characters and their lives decades after we last saw them is enough to pique the interest of fans. The details set out by Lowe and Moore suggest that there is genuine momentum behind the project. Details about the plot or the rest of the cast are yet to be revealed, but for now, the passage of time between the original film’s release and the present day could turn out to be a unique opportunity for the project to offer a fresh perspective on timeless issues, honor the legacy of the Brat Pack era, and connect with a new generation of viewers.
