‘Sherlock & Daughter’ Star Blu Hunt Shares the Fun of New Show

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the beloved Sherlock Holmes franchise still continues with new media 140 years after it began with A Study in Scarlet. The CW is up next with the spinoff series Sherlock & Daughter. The great English actor David Thewlis plays the iconic detective, while rising star Blu Hunt (The New Mutants) portrays his offspring. MovieWeb recently caught up with Hunt while she was promoting her new Shudder film The Dead Thing, and the actress also took time to preview what’s to come with her new CW show.

“It’s not really a reinvention because, obviously, Sherlock Holmes has a daughter,” Hunt told us. “Everyone’s always thinking of them as being, like, basically asexual, you know? But I mean, working with David Thewlis is, like, more than a dream come true. And he’s like the coolest person ever, and he taught me so much about acting, and it’s just a great memory.” Hunt added:

“I think it’ll be really fun, you know? It’s super cute… It’s definitely, like, girl power… but we have a very sweet relationship. I think the relationship between the two of them is very, very sweet, and it’s fun because I definitely tried to bring some naturalism to the role. And I think we had a lot of fun acting together.”

Blu Hunt on Her “Obsessive Phase” with Dating Apps

Marvel fans might also remember Hunt’s starring role in The New Mutants (2020), a one-off superhero flick that somehow never took off with audiences and didn’t ignite the franchise it intended to. “I think it was definitely a blessing in disguise,” said Hunt regarding the batch of characters’ fate on the big screen. “I think I was relieved.”

Every Movie Coming to Shudder in February 2025

Whether viewers plan to watch something alone or with a partner, Shudder has every type of frightening film they could want this month.

And now there’s The Dead Thing as Hunt’s next starring role, hitting Shudder just in time for Valentine’s Day. Her lead heroine Alex spends her days on the dating apps, searching hopelessly for the right soulmate, which ultimately leads to dire consequences — and Hunt opened up to us about the pertinent real-life experience she brought to her juicy new character:

“I did dating apps at one point, no longer. But actually, you know, I did technically meet my current boyfriend… on a dating app in 2020. And then I ghosted him, and we were supposed to go on, like, a walk… And I just fully ghosted him. Then we met again, like, three years later, in-person, and now we’re in love.”

“But I definitely had an obsessive phase, probably mostly in like 2020 when, you know, things were very dark, obviously,” Hunt added about her time on dating apps. “I was single, and I lived alone, quarantining alone, and I would just sit on my phone, on two different dating apps… The difference between me and [my character] Alex is I feel like I would hardly ever meet with anybody that I matched with.” Be sure to swipe right on The Dead Thing, which will begin streaming on Shudder February 14.
