It’s been more than two years since her split from Kody Brown and Janelle Brown is sharing her insights into the family’s finances. She shared how Kody and the Sister Wives handled finances, paid bills, and more. Plus, she revealed how that changed over the years as Kody spent more money on his own.
It’s no wonder she’s concerned about finances and threatening legal action against Kody and Robyn Brown if she doesn’t get what she believes she’s owed.
Janelle shared that Kody Brown gradually spent more and more of the family’s money
On the January 26 episode of the show, Janelle shared that in the early years of the plural marriage, finances were a shared responsibility. “We weighed in on what bills should be paid, how we were going to pay, who got priority,” she explained.
This was how they handled things when she married Kody in 1993, three years after he married Meri Brown. And this dynamic remained as Kody married Christine Brown in 1994 and eventually Robyn in 2010.
“Then the last several years, Kody would just take out funds and I don’t know what for,” Janelle said. “And the money was just being spent and lots of it. Towards the end, it was just really hard.”
Kody, however, believed that there were limits to his need for financial transparency. “I was a father to 18 and a husband to more than just Janelle,” he said in his defense. “So we had a lot of places that money needed to go that weren’t Janelle’s business.”
Kody maintains that much of the money was spent on cars, school, and insurance for the kids. But Janelle, and even Meri, are skeptical.
This may explain why the two are wary about the controversial property in Coyote Pass and Kody’s shady way of handling it. Janelle has expressed her desire for legal representation. And now Meri wants to lawyer up too so that she can be sure she gets her fair share.
