Star Wars Admits Kylo Ren’s Most Iconic Line Was Always a Lie

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #1Star Wars is proving that one of Kylo Ren’s best lines was immediately proven to be a lie in the aftermath of The Last Jedi. Having rejected the legacy of his parents and uncle with his corruption to the dark side, Ben Solo tells Rey in Episode VIII that she needed to let the past die and kill it if necessary to become what she was meant to be. However, Star Wars’ brand-new Kylo Ren series reveals that Ben himself couldn’t follow through on his own words as the galaxy’s new Supreme Leader.

In Marvel’s new and canonical Legacy of Vader #1 from Charles Soule and Luke Ross, Kylo Ren returns his Star Destroyer and declares himself the First Order’s Supreme Leader, blaming the Resistance for Snoke’s death. However, Kylo then struggles to truly let go of his past, motivating a visit to Darth Vader’s castle on Mustafar to fully rid himself of the legacies he once belonged to as Ben Solo, seeking to become something more “free” going forward. However, a still-living servant of Vader reveals just how foolish that idea truly is:

Kylo intended to ambiguously destroy every trace of the past he could find, beginning with his grandfather. However, Vaneé shows the Supreme Leader an alternate path, one that completely nullifies Kylo Ren’s iconic line about killing the past in The Last Jedi.

Despite His Words to Rey, Kylo Ren Struggled To Kill The Past

He Couldn’t Let It Die

For all his confidence and desire to see Rey release herself from the past so that she might join him on a new path forward in The Last Jedi, it’s clear that Ben’s own struggle with legacy and history was far from over. Shown in his quarters after his bold declaration to the First Order, Ben is truly at a loss, so much so that Kylo faces the charred remains of Vader’s mask, rejecting the one legacy he’d embraced since falling to the dark side, Kylo Ren was determined to destroy everything and everyone connected to his past.

Star Wars: 10 Things Only Comic Books Fans Know About Kylo Ren

Thanks to the Star Wars comic books, there’s a lot more to discover about Kylo Ren than what fans saw on the big screen.

Starting with his grandfather, it certainly seemed as though Kylo was prepared to wipe Darth Vader’s fortress off the face of Mustafar, symbolizing his desire to finally kill the past for good. However, this appears to no longer be the case. Arriving at the doors of the fortress on the fiery world where Anakin Skywalker truly became Darth Vader, a single drop of Kylo’s blood grants him access, bringing him face to face with none other than what’s left of Vaneé, the castle caretaker (who’s now just a head attached to a large droid apparatus).

Kylo Ren Will Now Be Shown How To Make The Past His Power

Learning From His Grandfather, Darth Vader

Confirming that Vader used his past to fuel his rage, Vaneé offers to share more of the Dark Lord’s legacy with Ben, promising to show him how his grandfather turned his past into true power. Ben agrees, choosing to embrace and learn more about the past rather than killing it as he was so determined to do in The Last Jedi. As such, it’s going to be very exciting to see what Kylo and Vaneé uncover together in future issues, and how this new perspective undoubtedly leads to Kylo’s evolution ahead of Rise of Skywalker.

Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #1 is on sale now from Marvel Comics.
