Dragon Ball has overlooked many of its great heroes for years, as the manga’s focus tends to remain squarely on the Saiyans. However, one classic character is being brought back into the limelight by Dragon Ball Super artist Toyotaro, sparking rumors about whether she’ll have a bigger role to play when the manga returns.
Toyotaro released new artwork of Videl, Gohan’s wife and daughter of Mr. Satan, dressed in her “Great Saiyaman 2” form. The Great Saiyaman 2 identity was one created exclusively for the anime, specifically following Kid Buu’s defeat, and she would appear in this form in both the movie Wrath of the Dragon and Dragon Ball GT. While Videl’s Great Saiyaman 2 (or “Great Saiyawoman”) identity never appeared in the manga, Toyotaro seems to have just felt like drawing her in that way, likely reminded of it by Goten and Trunks’ own identities as Saiyaman X-1 and X-2, as seen in the most recent chapter of Super.
Could Videl’s New Art Signal Her Return?
Videl May Be Ready to Fight Once Again
The artwork is accompanied by a message reading: “In the anime, Videl was once a Saiyaman! Everyone loves heroes, no matter what they say!” It’s interesting, as Videl has largely been confined to a motherly role in Dragon Ball Super, and hasn’t gotten to fight, although she was once a capable fighter. Videl often struggled to keep up with the others, only able to fly at low speeds and was out of her depth fighting Majin Spopovich, but she fought bravely regardless. Many fans lamented Videl’s turn towards a more domestic life, even if she wasn’t powerful enough to fight new enemies.
