A flight attendant has explained why travellers should not clap when a plane lands.
While it’s common for some passengers to applaud upon landing as a sign of gratitude or relief, especially after a turbulent flight, the flight attendant has revealed on TikTok why the well-meaning gesture might not have the desired effect
“Although some passengers applaud upon landing, I don’t recommend it,” says Barbara Bacilieri. She pointed out that the pilot won’t hear the applause due to the cockpit door blocking out the noise.
She also lists several other reasons not to clap – including potential safety incidents or unexpected issues that could arise after landing.
The Argentinian cabin crew member, who posts under the handle @Barbiebac, adds that while many see clapping as a way to release tension built up during the flight or to express thanks after a difficult landing, it’s best to wait until the plane has fully stopped.
“Until that moment, unexpected situations can still occur,” she warns, saying events like brake failures, emergency reverser activation, or tyre bursts are possible until the aircraft is completely stopped and safe.
Such incidents could lead to an evacuation, making applause inappropriate, she says. To some, cheering can seem inappropriate as each landing is the result of a team effort.
Barbara pointed out that it’s also the cabin crew, air traffic controllers and ground staff who make safe journeys possible.
However, nothing is stopping you from applauding if you’d like to. The flight attendant added: “Clapping or not is a personal choice.”
The expert stresses the importance of maintaining safety and adhering to protocols throughout the flight, reminding passengers to stay patient and understanding until fully docked at the terminal.
Other industry professionals agree that clapping can be considered poor etiquette – with some even saying it could be deemed disrespectful to the pilot’s skill.
Gemma Brown, Head of Commercial at Travel Republic, said: “When the plane lands, avoid clapping as it can appear rude to the pilots, as though you’re undermining their skill.”
“You can show your appreciation at the end of the flight with a polite thank you. The pilot and crew will usually wait at the exit giving you an opportunity to show your gratitude.”
