Jamie Foxx Got Robert Downey Jr. to Play a Hispanic Man in His Film ‘All-Star Weekend’

Jamie Foxx was part of a press conference today while promoting his Apple TV+ documentary production, Number One on the Call Sheet, and MovieWeb had a chance to ask Foxx about the challenges of moving behind the camera to direct his first feature-length fiction film, All-Star Weekend. It’s apparently a wild comedy full of vignettes, like the absolute classic Robert Townsend comedy, Hollywood Shuffle. And apparently, Robert Downey Jr. is ditching the Blackface of Tropic Thunder for a different skin complexion. As a matter of fact, so is Jamie Foxx.

Foxx discussed calling in a variety of people to take part in what seems like an outrageous comedy — not just Robert Downey Jr., but also Benicio Del Toro, Gerard Butler, Snoop Dogg, Jeremy Piven, Eva Longoria, DJ Khaled, The Game, and many others. In a hilarious Downey Jr. impersonation, Foxx imitated the actor accepting the role, and then detailed Downey Jr.’s quick trepidation. “At two o’clock in the morning he texted me, and he’s like, ‘Yo, bro, I’m nervous about playing a Hispanic guy.’ And I’m like, ‘You played a Black guy in Tropic Thunder!‘” Foxx will play several characters himself, including “a quadraplegic gangster” and a “white cop” who apparently says such racist things that they had trouble casting anybody else to say them.
