Netflix’s new historical drama with only six episodes, The Leopard, is the perfect replacement for the streamer’s hit show, The Crown. Premiering in 2016, The Crown ran for six seasons and concluded in 2023. The Netflix original series covered the life of Queen Elizabeth II from the time she became queen in 1952 to the early 2000s. Different actors, including Claire Foy, Olivia Colman, and Imelda Staunton, portrayed Queen Elizabeth in the popular show.
Throughout its six-season run, The Crown wasn’t a stranger to criticism, with some saying that it inaccurately portrayed and sensationalized historical events. Despite the criticisms, The Crown drew in a large audience. There aren’t quite a lot of TV shows like The Crown, and that’s mainly because it is based on a real royal family. While The Crown can hardly be replaced, Netflix’s latest period drama can help fill the hole left by the series.
Netflix’s The Leopard Is Perfect For Fans Of The Crown
The Leopard Is About An Aristocratic Family
Although The Crown and The Leopard have different tones and plots, they also share a lot in common. The Leopard centers around the Corberas, a Sicilian aristocratic family led by the Prince of Salina, Prince Don Fabrizio Corbera, who were close to the Bourbons. Set in the late 1800s, the period drama takes place during the unification of Italy. Fans of The Crown will enjoy The Leopard because it includes family drama and the challenges that a country going through a political change goes through.

New Royal Family Movie Is The Perfect Replacement For The Crown Season 7
An upcoming Netflix movie revolves around an eventful moment in the history of the royal family that The Crown never got the chance to depict.
However, The Leopard is more intense and even sexually explicit compared to The Crown. The Corberas are not as refined as the British royal family and can, at times, be loud. But it’s this difference between the two shows that some people might enjoy. Although the British royal family, as depicted in The Crown, ultimately loved each other, they weren’t as open about their affection as the Corberas are.
The Leopard’s Royal Story Has A Major Difference From The Crown
The Leopard Is Fiction
While The Leopard and The Crown center around aristocratic families, there is a huge difference between the two period dramas. The Leopard is based on Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s 1958 novel of the same name. The characters in the series are not real people. Instead, Lampedusa drew inspiration for his novel from the time he spent with the Sicilian royal family. That being said, there are some things in the TV show that are accurate.

The unification of Italy did take place in 1861 and was as bloody as is depicted in the limited series (via Office Of The Historian). The Crown, on the other hand, is a fictionalized portrayal of real life. Almost every event featured in The Crown Tis true to life to some degree, seeing as it is based on real people. Still, those who liked The Crown will most likely enjoy The Leopard.
