‘Stop flying to Athens or Budapest – visit this alternative instead’ | Europe | Travel

If you’re considering jetting off to Athens or Budapest this year, you may want to consider this alternative.

With spring now in full swing, many of us will be beginning to think about possible destinations for our upcoming summer holidays. Greece, with its stunning beaches, historic cities and delicious food, is always a popular choice.

Those who enjoy a city break may be drawn to Athens. This sprawling city is steeped in culture and can be relatively affordable for people travelling on a budget.

Alternatively, those looking for an action-packed break may choose to go to Budapest, Hungary. With its gorgeous Old Town and thermal baths, this is the perfect place for a long weekend away.

However, if you’re trying to keep costs down this year, another capital in a nearby country could be a better choice. Sofia in Bulgaria welcomed around 1.27million tourists last year, and according to one travel enthusiast, it’s for good reason.

Self-proclaimed ‘adventure traveller’ Tara, known as @wheretarawent on TikTok, claimed she spent ‘almost no money’ during her time in Sofia. “I don’t consider myself a budget traveller,” she said.

“But I spent almost no money in this underrated European city that might be an alternative for Athens.” She explained that you could book a number of tours, including a graffiti tour or historical walking tour – there’s even a food tour for those who can’t get enough of the local cuisine.

All of the tours Tara recommended are free, meaning you can save your money for other activities. Tara continued: “Sofia might make a good dupe for Budapest thanks to its thermal baths and neoclassical architecture.

“However, I think it might be more comparable to Athens, Greece, since both cities boast Byzantine churches and are situated near the mountains.

“Even if you aren’t looking for an alternative destination, Sofia should be on your European travel radar.”

Flights to Sofia can cost as little as £25 from UK airports depending on when you fly. The most popular time to visit is August, according to Wizz Air, while February is considered the city’s low season, possibly due to its cold weather in winter.

The average high in the peak season is 29C, meaning you can still bask in glorious sunshine while soaking up the sights. Accommodation typically ranges from about £27 to £122 per night.
