In October 2024, One Direction, their fans, and the entire music industry were heartbroken when it was reported that Liam Payne had died. Of course, this led many to wonder if the band would finally reunite after 10 years in his honor, but a reunion doesn’t feel right at this point. Over the years, many acts have done this, including Pantera, who brought on friends of their late bandmates, the Rolling Stones, carrying on without drummer Charlie Watts, and AC/DC continuing after Bon Scott had died.
However, for all the bands that have been able to carry on, there are plenty that choose not to. There hasn’t been a major Beatles reunion, Led Zeppelin hasn’t toured the world again, and the Beastie Boys called it a day. Sometimes, it is just too hard for people to be on stage without the band they have come to know being whole. Occasionally, things do change as Linkin Park has continued as of the fall of 2024, and even Nirvana has made a few appearances, but the remaining members of One Direction may be better off staying solo.
One Direction Wouldn’t Be The Same After Losing Liam Payne
A Void Would Be Felt
Part of what makes picturing One Direction continuing without Liam hard is the fact that they were brought together by chance. A lot of groups choose who they want to be with, but that wasn’t the case with them. They were formed through the television show The X-Factor, and became bonded through circumstances much different than a lot of bands in the past. They truly had to learn about each other, which created the strongest of brotherhoods.
Additionally, Liam was one of the four members remaining on their final album in 2015. Famously, Zayn Malik had left the group to focus on his private life, living as a normal 22-year-old at the time. To see the group do anything now, given Liam’s role in keeping the band going during that time, just wouldn’t feel right. Furthermore, there is no way the band could perform songs like “Love You Goodbye,” “Through the Dark,” or “Fireproof,” as Liam had such a significant role in those.
The void would be felt tremendously, making any performance difficult for the fans and the band to endure.
The void would be felt tremendously, making any performance difficult for the fans and the band to endure. It would be heavily scrutinized whether the band was honoring Liam appropriately with the tributes they were doing. If the fans felt they didn’t do enough, the conversation would grow loud, overshadowing what they were trying to achieve in the first place. Unfortunately, there is no blueprint for navigating these reunions, so they would be left hoping they were doing it correctly.
The One Direction Members Have Already Solidified Their Own Solo Brands
Their Names Are Established
It’s not easy for members to leave a boy band and become successful on their own. Perhaps the most famous example is NSYNC, where each member was able to find their own path after disbanding. One Direction has been the same, as Harry, Zayn, Niall, and Louis have all begun their journeys of pursuing successful solo careers.
Zayn was the first to leave the band, and when he did, his first solo album was not far behind. Known for songs like “PILLOWTALK” and “Sweat,” he is now four albums in, with his latest arriving in 2024. He has also been successful in fashion, as a philanthropist, and has enjoyed Yu-Gi-Oh!, in his time. As for Niall, he is known for his hits “Slow Hands” and “This Town.” Not only is he three albums into his solo career, but he has been active in charity and activism.

Zayn Malik has played a song from One Direction for the first time in 10 years, though Harry, Niall, Louis, & Liam have all paid tribute to the band.
Next, there is Harry Styles, who has begun his solo adventure with each of his three albums becoming platinum certified in the United States. Styles has created a slew of hits, such as “As It Was,” “Sign of the Times,” and “Watermelon Sugar.” Styles is currently working on his next solo album, which is expected to release at some point this year. Along with being considered a pop icon, he is dedicated to his work in philanthropy and activism as well.
Lastly, Louis is the most recent to start his solo career with his first album being released in 2020. He completed his second album in 2022, and has released a live record as of 2024. Along with music, he is a philanthropist, a phenomenal football (soccer) player, and a producer.
It’s Time To Celebrate One Direction For What They Were, Not Who They Could Be
There Is A Lot To Be Proud Of
In the short time they were together, One Direction turned themselves into arguably the most successful boy band of all time. Much like other artists of their generation, such as Ariana Grande (who a One Direction member once wrote for), the legacy they have created continues to inspire up-and-coming performers. From the time they formed in 2010, until they disbanded in 2016, the band released five albums. The only record not to feature all five members was the last one, Made in the A.M., which was in 2015 after Zayn had left.

With her album Dangerous Woman, Ariana Grande laid the foundation that is inspiring the next generation of superstars, including Tate McRae.
The band became known for hits such as “Night Changes,” “Story of My Life,” and “What Makes You Beautiful,” all of which have over one billion streams on Spotify. Speaking of one billion, that is the estimated net worth the band has generated through merchandise, ticket sales, and everything in between. They have even sold over 70 million records, which makes them not only one of the best-selling boy bands ever, but also places them among the most elite artists.
Every album that they have ever produced has gone platinum. Even both of their concert movies are platinum certified. There is no doubt that if they released any new work, it would have the same success, but some things are bigger than statistics. While monetarily, a reunion could be the right move, internally it would cause a lot of mixed emotions. One Direction will always be held in high regard, but it may be best to let their history speak for itself, instead of trying to rewrite it without Liam Payne.
