Ash Vs Evil Dead Cancellation Still Stings Seven Years Later

Seven years have gone by since Starz aired Ash Vs Evil Dead but the scar still seems to hurt. Bloody Disgusting posted the news on social media and updated people about its cancellation and then came flooding in nostalgic and angry feelings for those who still couldn’t get past the fact that Bruce Campbell does not wield a chainsaw anymore. The tweet hit it hard, received a mix of bittersweet acceptance and outright calls for revival.

“It couldn’t really stop any other way, could it?” Solomon Verdant later tweeted, trying to spin the cancellation as somehow poetic for a franchise based on chaos. Evil Dead and cliffhangers go together like peanut butter and jelly. And he’s not wrong; the abrupt ending certainly felt like classic Ash Williams mayhem. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that it hurts.

William Amaro wasn’t gonna take it, though, firing back, “Absolutely robbed.” “Unless Sam Raimi decides to direct another EVIL DEAD movie, this will probably be the last time we see Bruce portray Ash in Live Action.” Ouch. Definitely, stings. The whole above thought itself is like swallowing a bitter pill for diehard fans.

But wait, what’s this now about an animated series? Many replied speculating about the possibility of Bruce returning to voice Ash-for-cartoons fans. “Still have my fingers crossed Bruce and Co come back for an animated series,” tweeted Scaryberry in anticipation. Brain Mutant added that fire with confirmation: “He’s going to return for an animated series, but he confirmed it won’t be connected to Ash Vs Evil Dead…” So… good news? Bad news? Who knows these days.

Not everyone melted in sadness though. Mars Dorian called the show “enjoyable and whacky” but admitted he found it “repetitive pretty quickly.” Ouch but fair. So far, Evil Dead’s charm has been its crazy over-the-topness; after three seasons, maybe some viewers had their fill of Deadite shenanigans.

However, overwhelming support was there for Ash Vs Evil Dead. “It was actually that good, possibly even one of the best-ever televised shows,” summed Robert McQueen, thereby echoing a general vibe. Even Halloween Love came in with a glass-half-full perspective: “But so, so, so cool that we got it. That special Christmas morning feeling.”

To be continued; and Pablo and Kelly then? PrinnyWesker made sure, however, to have them remembered, stating: “I really hope the franchise does not forget them. I would like to see them again.” Valid point. Ray Santiago and Dana DeLorenzo are characters worthy of closure as they added heart to the madness.

So what does that leave us with? Mourning still, hoping still, quoting Ash’s one-liners like scripture. The show is gone but the fandom is still very much alive. Be it through comics, rumors of animation, or sheer stubborn denial, Evil Dead’s spirit isn’t going anywhere. Groovy.
