I Really Hope Robby Doesn’t Break Again After A Big Surprise Sets Up A Nailbiting Final Hour

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for The Pitt season 1, episode 14!The Pitt episode 13 ended on a major cliffhanger, with Robby having a breakdown after showing Jake the body of his dead girlfriend, Leah. After so many flashbacks about Adamson’s death, and the revelation Robby had to turn off his machine, it seemed like episode 14 would continue his downward spiral. This is compounded by the many deaths and life-threatening injuries throughout, all of which have made the series a dour look into the harshest elements of the medical world.

However, the show doesn’t let itself fester in darkness; instead, The Pitt‘s characters come together in their shared hour of need, treating the last of the shooting victims as new issues arise. While the story doesn’t shy away from the difficult realities of treating life-threatening injuries, it also doesn’t dwell on them. It feels like events are starting to wrap up, even as some major elements continue to play a major role in the story, laying the groundwork for an even more pulse-pounding finale.

Robby Does His Best To Hold Himself Together For One Last Hour

The Victim Rate Is Starting To Dwindle

When the episode begins, nobody can find Robby, unaware that he’s currently having a mental health crisis in the makeshift morgue. That is until Whittaker arrives on the scene, seeing Robby clutching his Star of David necklace while reciting the Shema prayer. While he might initially seem inconsolable, the younger doctor reminds Robby of his importance to managing the whole trauma hospital. It’s a fairly quick interaction, but it illustrates how, despite not being completely okay, Robby’s role is still critical to ensuring the hospital functions properly.

The Pitt Episode 13 Review: I’m Terrified For How The Medical Drama Will End After A Devastating Reveal Changes The Show Forever

The horrific aftermath of PittFest continues in a hard-to-watch hour that sees Robby teetering on the brink, while everyone is on high alert.

However, he’s still not completely better, even blowing up at Gloria when she tries berating him for having doctors donate untested blood to save patients’ lives. Something similar happens later in the episode, with The Pitt‘s medical realism shining through when a young boy named Flynn arrives, suffering from measles. While his condition is bad enough that he could die, his mother refuses a spinal tap to help save his life, believing it would paralyze him. Robby explodes and leaves, frustrated by the “Doctor Google b******t preventing him from saving the child’s life.

The episode’s other core focus sees him learn that, despite fears that David would be the shooter, he wasn’t; the real shooter was discovered dead, his weapons still near his body. This leads him and McKay to speak with him, explaining the 72-hour hold he’s under. David is angered by this and begs to be let out, but because of the petition his mother signed, he’s not going anywhere anytime soon. This comes back later in the episode with less focus on Robby, but this first interaction shows how he’s going to approach this ongoing scenario with the young man.

Everyone Is Working Together To Save Lives

Unlikely Alliances Form In The Wake Of Chaos

As Robby slowly gets back into his groove, everyone else works together to save the last remaining victims of the shooting. The last two patients they have are a man shot through the leg who was helping people at PittFest, alongside someone whose skin is blue. The latter patient brings Langdon and Santos together for the first time since The Pitt episode 10, when the senior resident was kicked out by Robby. Their discussions and diagnoses are curt, making it obvious their tension hasn’t resolved. Even so, they save their patient and prove they can work well together despite disagreements.

[T]he most emotional of these stories comes from Mel, who is helping the injured, shocked woman from the previous episode.

As for the man shot through the leg, he starts losing oxygen. Dr. Abbott realizes he has air entering his heart, having damaged it while running around saving people. He sets up a drastic procedure, running a tube from his back into his heart to get air out. However, it’s Dr. Mohan who performs it, managing to successfully stabilize him and start bringing his oxygen levels higher. Abbott is berated by Dr. Walsh, as she believes what he did was reckless and could have killed him, but he fires back about what could have happened if they had done nothing.

The man with the injured leg is also the brother of a woman in the waiting room whose husband died on the way to the hospital.

However, the most emotional of these stories comes from Mel, who is helping the injured, shocked woman from the previous episode. She reveals she’d tried putting her arm in front of her husband, who was in a wheelchair, to stop a bullet, only for it to go through her and kill him. After some scouring, Mel is able to find her daughter, who was also there, reuniting the duo. However, she ends up crying, apologizing to a nearby Robby who tells her not to feel sorry for caring.

McKay Has 2 Messes To Deal With As The Episode Closes Out

Her Fate In The Finale Remains Unclear

But the standout character in this episode was McKay. After her father comes to pick up Harrison (with a rude comment aimed at Chad on his way in), she rejoins Robby for another visit with David. This time, his mother is present, revealing she signed a petition and wants him to speak to someone about his urges to hurt women. He’s too upset to be consoled, with Robby taking McKay to the side and telling her she’ll need to help resolve the conflict. However, she’s clearly unsure how to do so.

The Pitt Episode 12 Review: I’m Terrified Robby’s Reached His Breaking Point As Shooting Victims Get Treatment In Most Intense Episode Yet

The Pitt episode 12 depicted the most horrifying environment at the hospital so far as the aftermath of last week’s PittFest shooting unfolds.

This is made all the more difficult by the episode’s ending, when a pair of police officers arrive to investigate why McKay tampered with her ankle monitor. Given The Pitt‘s realistic events, it makes sense that McKay had drilled a hole into it when it was beeping, something she tries justifying to the officers. However, they end up placing her under arrest in the episode’s final moments, a stressful twist that makes it hard to guess what will happen in the show’s final hour. But it does provide plenty to speculate about.

With one last hour remaining, The Pitt episode 14 offered a strikingly calmer penultimate episode contrasted with many of the more high-stakes installments in the series. But the events it sets up — from Robby confronting his feelings to McKay getting arrested — illustrate just how multifaceted and unpredictable the season finale is going to be. Thanks to its continued focus on multiple cases and realistic depictions of medical emergencies, the show is poised to keep up its stride heading into the last episode.

The Pitt season finale airs Thursday, April 10 at 9 p.m. ET on Max.
