James Gunn Reveals New Superman Comic Covers And Fans Are Divided

Emotional reactions have flown from one end of the spectrum to the absolute other since James Gunn gave us some DC news. Apparently, seven variants of new comic covers are being created by DC in anticipation of the new Superman film, which is scheduled to be out from May to July. Artists like Jim Lee, Dan Jurgens, and Nicola Scott will all be taking part in the promotion. Until it became hyped, but the responses? Holy hell, it’s chaos.

First of all- the news: These covers are officially linked to a real reboot in Gunn’s Superman, so they’re giving us a preview of the visual style we might explore in the film. Classic artists; new takes-pretty cool, no? Well, apparently not by everyone. Some have roasted the designs, claiming the suit looks like anything from diaper man to CGI man; ouch! One, named STEMMY, went as far as to joke, “Nah, I can see muscle definition in these pictures; can’t be your Diaperman.” Harsh but funny; isn’t it so?

Then there is the ever-waiting crowd, TheDarkNothing, who bombarded Gunn with the words “surprise release Superman as soon as right now,” since apparently July is too far away. RA Batista, however, approached Gunn with, “Man, the whole world is waiting for the trailer of this movie; today is the perfect day! Please help us; lol.” Man, some people are really needy.

However, some were positive. Some people really liked the art. “It shows the muscularity,” xgvmx1 said before saying that he would purchase the first cover- quite some valid credit for that. Arick Cohen Salmea also pointed out that one design was reminiscent of All-Star Superman-an excellent throwback reference.

Then let’s see…the weird stuff. I mean, a user really spent like an entire rant about how DC should make comics about Catholic saints and Jesus because that’s such a niche-not market at all. Why not, right? Of course, there were the usual accusations of AI with Nahuel Dibuja calling one of the covers “horrible soulless AI shit.”

Most unbelievable has to be the whole emotional spectrum. From, “We want a trailer right now!” to trashing the suit, to people just expressing joy for their favourite artists getting involved- probably chaos, but just another day in the life of comic book culture.

So what would be the response? I’m sure there was some version of Superman by Gunn on the table and no trailer is out yet. Some think that the covers look sleek; others think they look cheap; the hype train speeds ahead for some, is derailed for others. One thing is certain-the trailer is going to set the internet on fire.
