‘Mythic Quest’ Gets Canceled, but There’s Good News

It’s always a little awkward when you tell someone about a celebrity’s death and that person has never heard of them to begin with. It’s the same way with TV shows. “Have you heard that Swagger was canceled? “No, I haven’t heard of Swagger to begin with.” That’s often the case with Apple TV+ shows, which are some of the most wonderfully produced and star-studded series since the days of streaming began. The problem is, most people have never heard of them, give or take Ted Lasso and Severance. Well, if you haven’t heard of Mythic Quest, it’s a delightful show, and you should watch it, though it’s a little too late now. The series, which recently ended its fourth season (and a brief anthologized spin-off), has been canceled.

Created by three of the very funny minds behind It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (Charlie Day, Megan Ganz, and Rob McElhenney), Mythic Quest had a lot of people rooting for it. Apple gave it a second season renewal before the first season ever aired. It’s maintained critical acclaim, with every season earning at least 90%, and the final season getting a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Maybe that’s why, despite canceling the show, Apple is letting the team create a new, extended ending to Season 4 so that everything can be wrapped up, and so they could give the fans a nice send-off. It’s coming soon, too; it will premiere next week.

In a statement (via Variety), executive producers Megan Ganz, David Hornsby, and Rob McElhenney (who plays Mac McDonald in It’s Always Sunny) shared:

“Endings are hard. But after four incredible seasons, ‘Mythic Quest’ is coming to a close. We’re so proud of the show and the world we got to build—and deeply grateful to every cast and crew member who poured their heart into it. To all our fans, thank you for playing with us. To our partners at Apple, thank you for believing in the vision from the very beginning. Because endings are hard, with Apple’s blessing we made one final update to our last episode — so we could say goodbye, instead of just game over.”

Mythic Quest stars McElhenney, Ashly Burch, Jessie Ennis, Imani Hakim, David Hornsby, Charlotte Nicdao, Danny Pudi, F. Murray Abraham, and Naomi Ekperigin. The series focuses on a video game company that produces the titular game, an MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) that is releasing a major expansion pack titled Raven’s Quest (which was actually the subtitle of Season 1).

McElhenney leads the show as the creative director of the company, and the humor largely stems from his interactions with the ensemble and the many obstacles they face along the way. It’s essentially a workplace comedy, except, like HBO’s Silicon Valley, it balances its comedy with a genuinely engaging plot that has stakes and suspense.
