Netflix premiered one of the most popular coming-of-age series in 2022. Heartstopper has received critical acclaim throughout its three seasons for its tone and portrayal of the LGBTQ community. Fans of the popular romantic comedy-drama were hoping for a fourth season to conclude Nick and Charlie’s story properly, but the streaming service has decided to do a feature film finale instead. A love as cinematic as the characters deserves a proper ending. Since the series stood firm in the top ten most-watched on Netflix, it’s safe to say that the streaming service will ensure the movie stays in the hearts of many viewers.
According to Deadline, Netflix has greenlit the film in the most heartfelt way possible. The movie was announced on Heartstopper‘s third anniversary of its Apr. 22, 2022, premiere. Joe Locke and Kit Connor will continue to star as their leading characters and also executive produce. It will serve as the series finale, and Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice, The Earthquake Bird) will direct. Heartstopper is an adaptation of Alice Oseman‘s webcomic and graphic novel of the same name. Oseman, who wrote the script for the show, is back to serve as the writer for the feature film, which will be drawn from the final volume of the graphic novel.

Although no publish date has yet been shared for the sixth and final volume of the book series, Oseman has indicated that it will be released ahead of the series’ conclusion. Filming is expected to begin in the summer of this year after a tireless journey for Heartstopper’s creative team, who fought hard for a renewal. According to Deadline, in February, Oseman was hopeful of a positive outcome, which happened in the form of a feature film. She shared her excitement about the show’s magical conclusion and thanked supporters for their patience as they worked to bring back Nick, Charlie, and their friends for one last time.

It feels like you’re unstoppable when you’re young and in love. In the Season 3 finale, Nick and Charlie are inseparable, but reality starts to set in as Nick prepares to leave for school (going away to college). Nick expresses his fear of being away from Charlie to his friends, who encourage him to branch out. Meanwhile, Charlie has to find new independence at school. A long-distance relationship is doable, but reality starts to weigh on them. Their friends are also trying to navigate love and all of its challenges.
The Heartstopper movie could go in many different directions. So far, not much has been shared about what direction it’s going in, but viewers hope nothing is bigger and stronger than Nick and Charlie’s love. Will the two let long distance shatter their love?
