Bosch star Titus Welliver teases Renee Ballard’s (Maggie Q) introduction in Bosch: Legacy season 3 and how it is different from the book. The character is set to be introduced in the Bosch: Legacy season 3 finale, which also serves to set up a new show centering around the life of Ballard and her efforts in tackling underfunded cold cases. Originally introduced by Michael Connelly in his 2017 novel, The Late Show, Ballard appears in a total of six books.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Welliver discussed Ballard and Bosch’s onscreen relationship and compared it to the books. The actor shared that while in the novels, they became very close throughout the six books, it’d be challenging to do in TV shows where each episode spans under or around an hour. In the show, they “fast became friends” and had immediate chemistry. Welliver further teased that Ballard had a strong introduction in season 3 “rooted in the Bosch cannons.” Check out his comments below:
The Renée Ballard spinoff series, yes. In one of the last episodes of this final season, we introduce the character of Renée Ballard, played brilliantly by Maggie Q. That’s a relationship that exists within the books. She’s younger than Harry is. They cross paths and in the books, because obviously, you’ve got more time and there has been several books written with the two of them working together, they forge a relationship. He becomes kind of a mentor to her, and she also grants him access to stuff that he wouldn’t normally be able to get because he’s no longer a cop. He has sort of paternal feelings for her. It’s a beautifully realized relationship in the books. Now, in 45 or 50 minutes of an episode you can only do so much, but Maggie and I had really good chemistry. We fast became friends, and I think the introduction to her character is really really strong, and it’s rooted in the Bosch cannons.
The Show Approaches Bosch And Renée Ballard’s Relationship Differently
In Connelly’s books, Ballard serves as a co-lead alongside Bosch. However, in the upcoming Renée Ballard show, she’s assumed to be the lead, which means that there will be some changes in comparison to the book’s characters and potential storylines. Welliver’s comments suggest that one of the biggest changes will be how their relationship is developed. While the books offer a more nuanced depiction of the two working together and Bosch being a mentor and father figure to Ballard, the show might not have time to build it up. Instead, their relationship could be case-driven and rooted in their chemistry.

Bosch and Bosch: Legacy have both been remarkably consistent in terms of writing and acting, but some story lines still stand out from the rest.
Connelly based Renée Ballard on a homicide detective at LAPD, who had a particular interest in serial killers and cold cases and worked her up the ranks. With two of her most famous cases being Samuel Little and a 2018 serial killer responsible for murdering over 90 victims, Ballard has a lot of potential as a new character in Bosch: Legacy. Welliver’s comments about the character’s introduction rooted in the Bosch canons also indicate that the upcoming episode could include something that book fans are already familiar with.
Our Take On Renée Ballard And Bosch’s Relationship
Bosch And Ballard Together Will Be A Highlight
Renée Ballard, as a character, has a lot of potential. Though she will have her own show, her relationship with Bosch is still at the center of everything. The TV adaptation will likely include more changes than the ones Welliver mentioned, but seeing how Maggie Q’s character will be similar and different from Ballard in the source material is one of the fun things about the upcoming spinoff, which is expected to arrive in the fall after Bosch: Legacy‘s conclusion.
The wait won’t be long, and based on the first-look images that tease Ballard and Bosch scenes in Bosch: Legacy season 3 finale arriving on April 17, the casting and costumes have already done half of the job depicting the relationship between the two. Bosch already has a fatherly vibe and a sense of comfort around Ballard.
