‘Road House 2’ Reportedly Eyeing Guy Ritchie To Direct

The “cooler” will return, as a hot new rumor finally offers an update on the highly anticipated action movie sequel, Road House 2. While Amazon did not release anything about the project during CinemaCon, a new report claims that none other than Snatch and The Gentlemen director Guy Ritchie

is now in talks to helm the movie, taking over from the first outing’s Doug Liman, with Will Beall (Aquaman, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Bad Boys: Ride or Die) penning the script. Coming courtesy of Puck News, this would see Ritchie reunite with both Prime Video and Road House star Jake Gyllenhaal following the 2023 war movie, The Covenant.

Released last year and directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) from a screenplay written by Anthony Bagarozzi (The Nice Guys) and Charles Mondry (Doc Savage), Road House stars Jake Gyllenhaal

as Elwood Dalton alongside UFC champion fighter Conor McGregor, Billy Magnussen (The Many Saints of Newark), Daniela Melchior (The Suicide Squad), Gbemisola Ikumelo (A League of Their Own), Lukas Gage (Euphoria), Hannah Love Lanier (The Tiny Mighty Club), Travis Van Winkle (You), B.K. Cannon (Why Women Kill), Arturo Castro (The Terminal List), Dominique Columbus (Ray Donovan), Beau Knapp (The Lost Symbol), and Bob Menery (Billions).

Road House Remake Director Defends the Controversial Fight Scenes

“I look at other movies, and it looks so fake to me.”

Reimagining the 1989 Patrick Swayze cult classic for modern audiences, Road House follows Gyllenhaal as ex-UFC fighter Dalton, who takes a job as a bouncer at a Florida Keys roadhouse…only to discover that this paradise is not all it seems.

The Road House remake was a huge hit for the streaming service when it controversially landed on Prime Video back in March last year. The action movie attracted a record-breaking 50 million worldwide viewers over its first two weekends which, according to the studio, making Road House the “most-watched produced film debut ever on a worldwide basis.” However, it was met with mixed reviews from both critics and audiences alike. Road House now stands at a “fresh” rating of 60% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes alongside 52% from audiences on the Popcornmeter. “Road House updates a cult classic for a new generation, happily replicating the original’s emphasis on cheesy brawn over narrative brains,” the critics’ consensus reads. Meanwhile, audiences found the remake to sometimes be “so bad it’s good,” but largely found the action outing disappointing due to “uneven acting” and a “ridiculous story.”

Road House 2 was officially announced in May 2024, with reports at the time confirming that Jake Gyllenhaal will return to reprise the lead role of former UFC fighter, Dalton. While the acclaimed actor and Oscar-nominee has yet to reveal much about the follow-up, he has teased how it will improve on its predecessor. By going bigger. “All I know is that I’m very excited about it,” he said, before revealing that Road House 2 promises to be “expansive, and it will be bigger.”

While it was assumed that Conor McGregor would return as the villainous Knox, whose comeback was teased in a mid-credits scene at the end of the first movie, the former fighter-turned-actor has now become a far more controversial figure than he was before after being found guilty of sexual assault in a civil case brought by Nikita Hand, who accused him of raping her at a Dublin hotel in December 2018.
