Each year, the Annecy International Animation Film Festival gives a preview of what will undoubtedly become the most acclaimed and popular animated titles in the year to come. Last year, the festival premiered Flow, which would go on to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature FIlm, along with another future Oscar nominee, Memoir of a Snail. They also featured a variety of what would become big Netflix titles, such as The Imaginary, Blue Eye Samurai, Pokémon Concierge, and Twilight of the Gods. This year, Netflix is returning to Annecy with a bold, genre-spanning line-up of films, series, and special events, including what may be the crown jewel of them all, an animated series from the Stranger Things universe, created by the Duffer brothers themselves.
The animated series was announced two years ago but now has the official title of Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, and a release date of, well, “coming soon.” Considering that everything else Netflix is teasing and screening at Annecy will be released this year, it’s safe to say that the show will begin streaming on Netflix near the end of 2025. Matt and Ross Duffer are executive producing the series alongside Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen via 21 Laps. Based on the title, it’s possible that the animated series will be an episodic anthology of sorts, focusing on different characters and adventures in the town of Hawkins.
Eric Robles’ Flying Bark Productions has been working on the animation; their previous titles include Rise of the Mutant Teenage Turtles (and the movie), Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Glitch Techs, and What If…? The Duffers previously said of Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 and Eric Robles:
“We’ve always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling […] We couldn’t be more blown away by what Eric Robles and his team have come up with –– the scripts and artwork are incredible, and we can’t wait to share more with you! The adventure continues…”
Robles will be presenting a world-exclusive first look at Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 on June 11 at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival when the “Next on Netflix Animation” panel returns to Théâtre Bonlieu. Watch this space for more information.
