Nobody knew it, but in the winter of 2017, Bravo was about to release a hit. Summer House premiered during a cold January and immediately lifted viewers’ spirits. The series was light, jovial, and full of harmless drama. The idea of watching a group of friends party on their weekends in Montauk was heaven on earth. And if you were an East Coast fan, you probably had done it yourself at least once. And while the weekend getaways look like they go off with a hitch, there are a lot of behind-the-scenes secrets.
Chores still happen in the Summer House
According to a Bravo producer, the Summer House crew’s laundry is a never-ending job. Who would have thought that the laundry would pile up when you’re living in mostly swimsuits? While the gang might be out tanning and gyming, it turns out laundry is the only thing really happening in the mansion. One producer shared that former cast member Luke Gulbranson would arrive at the Montauk home every Friday with a pile of dirty laundry as if he was returning home to his parents after college. Other cast members have also treated the house like their own personal laundromat.
As fans have seen, the house can get pretty messy. And while there isn’t an everyday cleaner who comes in, one house guest usually makes sure to pick up after himself. According to Bravo, Carl Radke is the one guy who will make sure to clean up his mess.
The Summer House cameras are always watching
As most Summer House fans are aware, there are Bravo cameras everywhere throughout the home. This season alone, we’ve seen Imrul Hassan try to cover up his bedroom camera with a towel to hide his sexual escapades. But the cameras usually always win. One secret, however, is that the only camera-free zone is the bathroom. It makes sense. I can’t imagine watching a Bravoleb pee would be that entertaining. But there are rules for the bathroom. Paige DeSorbo once explained on The Skinny Confidential, “If you’re in the bathroom with another person, cameras can come in.”
Surveillance also never sleeps. The Bravo crew has to keep their eyes on the Summer House cast 24/7. It turns out there is a note-taker who logs everything caught by all the Bravo cameras. The network shared, “The team doesn’t like to miss a moment of conversation, comedy, or drama.” Having cameras everywhere ensures that viewers won’t miss out on any juicy details.
Summer House has broken the fourth wall
Even though the network doesn’t love it when someone screams “Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!” it happens even on Summer House. Over the years, some viewers have debated whether or not producers play a role by pulling some strings behind the scenes. During one reunion, Luke broke the fourth wall when he claimed producers pushed him to invite Hannah Berner to Minnesota. However, Andy Cohen and Carl insisted that the cast is what is driving the drama.
One surprising secret was that the Summer House crew does not use a glam squad. Unlike many other Bravo shows, the roomies like to do their own touch-ups. I find this bit of information refreshing, as most viewers couldn’t relate to using a professional daily anyway.
Who’s the best Summer House party animal?
The votes are in, and according to producers, Kyle Cooke is the best Summer House partier. The title makes sense, with producers noting the Loverboy founder is their “favorite party animal.” They say, “He goes from 0-10, is ready to have a blast, and not afraid to embarrass himself.” And when it comes to their over-the-top weekend parties, the cast are in charge of their own themes. The network revealed that the roomies brainstorm together and are the creators of the wild parties.
And if you’ve ever wondered why you hear Ciara Miller or Amanda Batula telling the guests they have to leave, there is a reason for it. The production crew’s main concern is “Guests not leaving when the party is over.” And while rent is free, the parties are not. The cast members have to cover the cost of their own parties. Kyle has noted that he tracks all his expenses on a spreadsheet. And Lindsay Hubbard’s famed birthday party set them back a cool $5,000.
Summer House is available to stream on Peacock.
