This Invincible Hero Is Secretly Way, Way More Powerful Than Conquest

Conquest is one of the most feared Viltrumites in all of Invincible, as made clear by the fact that Mark Grayson only barely survived their titanic fight. However, there is one hero in the Invincible universe who is shown to be even more powerful than Conquest, with the Viltrumite warlord actually afraid to take them on in a straight fight.

Invincible #109, written by Robert Kirkman, with art by Ryan Ottley, offered a glimpse of an alternate reality, which revealed that Monster Girl can be powerful enough to take on Conquest.

In the issue, thinking that their emperor is being held hostage by one of the Mauler twins, a group of Viltrumites led by Anissa and Conquest bring an infant to the fight. Conquest is unsure of what they’re about to unleash, but Anissa throws the infant down to the ground, leading to an unexpected turn of events.

Invincible #109 subsequently revealed that the infant is actually this universe’s Monster Girl, who grows into a full-on Kaiju far bigger than she had ever been portrayed before in the series. Invincible fans will remember that every time Monster Girl transforms into her monstrous form, her human side de-ages slightly, resulting in a 25-year-old woman who looks like a twelve-year-old girl. Monster Girl has to be careful about how much she uses her powers, as otherwise she’ll de-age to the point where she will eventually no longer exist.

Invincible vs Superman: The Winner of Comics’ Best Showdown Finally Has a Clear Answer

Invincible’s surge in popularity has led to renewed interest in who would win in a fight, Invincible or Superman; artist Ryan Ottley has a gory take.

It appears the Viltrumites who control the alternate Earth ruled by Invincible have no such concerns about Monster Girl’s well-being, as she has used her powers to such a degree that she’s now an infant when in human form. Her de-aging seems to have a reverse effect on her monstrous size and power, to the extent where even Conquest is nervous in using her to rescue Mark. “I’m not sure we’ll be able to contain it,” Conquest says, implying the last time Monster Girl was unleashed, they only barely managed to stop her.

Monster Girl is More Powerful Than Conquest, But It Comes At A Cost

She Must Fully De-Age Herself

Conquest is no pushover himself. First debuting in Invincible #61 by Robert Kirman and Ryan Ottley, Conquest was one of the few survivors of the Scourge Virus that ravaged the Viltrumites’ homeworld. Although he survived his infection, it left him depowered, eventually leaving scarred and missing an arm, lost in battle with the vicious alien species the Rognarr. This only caused him to become more powerful, as he replaced his missing arm with a mechanical one and quickly became one of the most feared conquerors in the entire Viltrumite Empire.

The battle between Conquest and Invincible was catastrophic, nearly killing Mark’s brother Oliver and Atom Eve in the process.

Conquest arrived on Earth following the Invincible War, in which Angstrom Levy gathered alternate versions of Mark Graysonto gain revenge upon Invincible. Mark didn’t even get the chance to catch his breath from the battle, as Conquest appeared to finish the job of conquering the planet that Mark’s father Omni-Man was sent to accomplish. The battle between Conquest and Invincible was catastrophic, nearly killing Mark’s brother Oliver and Atom Eve in the process. After Conquest’s body was taken away by government agents, Mark made Global Defense Agency leader Cecil Steadman swear that he would never bring him back.

The Significance Of This Alternate Monster Girl Variant

Pushed to the brink, Mark defeated Conquest after head-butting the villain again and again, forever establishing the Viltrumite warlord as one of the most powerful characters in the entire Invincible universe. While he was killed in battle, Global Defense Agency leader Cecil Steadman cloned Conquest, who eventually broke free and flew off into space to join the Viltrumite Empire once more. He was then killed again during the “Viltrumite War” storyline, as Mark defeated him after another brutal battle by keeping his grip on Conquest in space, causing him to suffocate.

Am I the Only One Who Remembers the First Invincible TV Show? It’s a Must For Comic Readers

Amazon’s Invincible TV show is a hit, but there is a chance that the series would’ve never seen the light of day if not for a forgotten gem by MTV.

All of those storylines should highlight why Conquest being scared of the alternate-universe Monster Girl is significant. The Invincible universe is filled with many uber-powerful characters, so learning that Monster Girl has the ability to defeat one of the most powerful is very interesting. While she was given a special belt by Robot that removed the de-aging of her human form while transforming, that does have the adverse effect of meaning she’ll never reach her full power as a Kaiju-sized behemoth. Still, it’s interesting to learn that Monster Girl is one of the few heroes in the Invincible universe to make Conquest quiver in fear.

Invincible #109 is available now from Image Comics.
