6 Biggest Questions The Eternaut Season 2 Must Answer Now That We Know The Show Is Renewed

Warning! This article contains spoilers for The Eternaut.

Since The Eternaut season 1’s ending intentionally leaves viewers with more questions than answers, its confirmed second season has to resolve many unresolved story beats. Based on Héctor Germán Oesterheld’s Argentine sci-fi comic of the same name, The Eternaut is a compelling series that treads the same path as some of the most well-known post-apocalyptic movies and shows in its early moments. It begins with an extinction event that kills many humans and leaves the survivors with an overwhelming sense of paranoia and confusion.

However, the more its story progresses, the more it seems to explore an uncharted domain that combines elements of alien invasion horror with time travel and political allegories. The Eternaut‘s unique exploration of alien invasions has made it an intriguing addition to Netflix’s vast roster of sci-fi shows, and many viewers are already looking forward to its confirmed second season. However, since The Eternaut season 1 ends on an ambiguous note and leaves many story beats unexplored, season 2 must answer at least a few nagging questions to ensure viewers remain invested.

What Do The Aliens Want From Humans?

The Aliens’ Motives Remain Unknown

The central alien invasion in The Eternaut unfolds in three stages. In the first stage, the aliens commit genocide and seem to destroy all modes of communication and transportation used by humans. With what follows, they use giant beetle-like creatures as weapons to further disrupt human resistance. The final stage involves them manipulating humans into working for them by implanting a mind-control device in their brains. With these plot developments, it seems evident that the aliens are trying to invade the human planet.

The Eternaut Show’s 9 Biggest Changes To The Comics

Even though The Eternaut is based on a comic of the same name, the Netflix show does not shy away introducing many changes to its source material.

However, their overarching motive remains unknown. In most alien invasion narratives, outer space beings use humans to harvest their own food. The Eternaut seems to be going in a different direction, where the aliens hope to control all of humanity instead of merely using them as food. But the creatures’ end goal still remains unexplored and ripe for deeper exploration in The Eternaut season 2.

Will Clara Eventually Join The Alien Army?

Clara’s Future Is Hinted At In Season 1’s Ending Scene

The Eternaut season 1 ends with a scene in which Juan gets a vision. In the vision, he sees his daughter, Clara, training with the military, suggesting that she, too, will eventually join forces with the aliens. The show revealed that Clara was abducted by the aliens, and she, too, has the mind-controlling device installed in her head. However, for some reason, she is able to resist the voice in her head and retain some elements of her human identity and memory instead of becoming an alien puppet.

…it is hard not to wonder whether Juan’s vision is a reflection of what is destined to happen in the future or something he can still control.

Given how the aliens have already installed their mind-controlling technology in her head, she, too, is prone to their manipulations. The closing scene suggests that, despite showing some resistance, she will eventually surrender and fall prey to the aliens’ plan. However, it is hard not to wonder whether Juan’s vision is a reflection of what is destined to happen in the future or something he can still control. If it does accurately show the future, will Juan be able to race against time to save his daughter before it is too late?

What Is The Meaning Of Juan’s Visions?

Juan Is The Titular “Eternaut” In The Series

Throughout The Eternaut season 1’s runtime, Juan keeps zoning out and getting strange visions. At first, it seems like his visions are a reflection of his PTSD from war. However, the more the show progresses, the more it becomes evident that his visions have a deeper significance in the show’s narrative. Juan not only gets visions from the past, but also seems to see alternate versions of the future. His ability to drift across space and time makes him the titular “Eternaut.”

How this will tie into the show’s overarching story is yet to be known. However, it seems likely that Juan will be able to put his ability to see the future to good use in season 2 and save humanity before it is too late.

Are There More Alien Forces Above The “Hand” Creature?

The Show May Not Have Revealed The Aliens’ Main Leader

The Eternaut season 1 seems to subtly establish a hierarchy among all the beings portrayed in its story. While the surviving humans lie somewhere at the bottom of the food chain, the ones mind-controlled by the aliens and the alien bugs are above them. Above all is the mysterious creature with many fingers that orchestrates the mind-control process and keeps humans under its control. The “Hand” alien could be the leading force behind the alien army. Or, it might just be another player working under an even more potent and malevolent alien force.

Is The River Plate Stadium The Main Base For Alien Operations?

A Strange Blue Light Emerges From The Stadium

A mysterious blue mist emerges from all the sites where the aliens set up their operations. For instance, even the location where the “Hand” creature controls humans using music is engulfed in a strange blue light. A similar light can be seen around the River Plate Stadium in The Eternaut season 1’s ending moments, when Juan gazes at the horizon and is overwhelmed by a feeling of déjà vu. The light could suggest that the stadium serves as the central hub for the overarching alien species.

If this holds true, the “Hand” creature may not even be the leading force behind all aliens. Like the bugs, it might be another ploy in the aliens’ long-term plan to invade Earth. The Eternaut season 2 will likely delve deeper into this and explore what is happening at the River Plate Stadium. This, in turn, would likely answer many questions about the aliens’ purpose and how the “Hand” is tied into it.

Which Planet Did The Aliens Come From?

The Aliens’ Backstory Could Explain Their Purpose

The Eternaut‘s characters notice red streaks of light falling from the sky before theorizing that they are being invaded by aliens. Their theories are eventually proven true when they encounter the giant alien bugs and the creature with strange hands. Unfortunately, The Eternaut maintains an air of ambiguity surrounding the aliens’ origins. It never explores where the aliens have come from and how they arrived on the planet. It also avoids disclosing anything about their mode of transportation.

Since the aliens’ origins could eventually help explain why they came to Earth in the first place and also help establish how many other planets they have invaded in the past, The Eternaut season 2 will likely delve deeper into their backstory. It might even specifically explain what the “Hand” creature wishes to achieve and whether he is the supreme leader of the alien species. With so many questions left unanswered in The Eternaut season 1’s ending moments, it is hard not to be thankful that Netflix has renewed the show for another season.
