Chicago PD Showrunner Unpacks Voight & Chapman’s Last Scene In The Season 12 Finale

Chicago P.D. showrunner Gwen Sigan has reflected on the season 12 finale and the emotionally-charged final scene between Voight and Assistant State Attorney Nina Chapman. Chicago P.D. season 12 ended in dramatic fashion, with the death of corrupt Deputy Chief Reid, who was shot and killed by Otero’s son. This led to an emotional meeting in which Chapman discovers Voight sanctioned Reid’s death. She tells him “It’s not who you are. I know you. You told me you believed there could be more,” to which Voight replies, “I don’t get more,” putting an end to the chances of a possible romance.

In an interview with ScreenRant, Sigan opened up on the climactic and emotionally charged scene between the two. She talked about how Voight sanctioning Reid’s death makes things messy for the pair, with Voight setting a boundary, and essentially telling Chapman he doesn’t get to have more with her. She mentions how the scene feels a lot like a breakup, but it’s not definitive, and there could be something to play with moving forward. Check out Sigan’s comments below:

ScreenRant: Chapman finds out that Voight sanctioned Reid’s death. What does this mean for their relationship and the trust between them?

Gwen Sigan: It’s not good. It’s definitely not good. That last scene, to me, is a lot like a breakup. It’s messy. It’s definitely not definitive. I don’t think that there’s nothing still there to play with, but he is setting a boundary. He is basically telling her, “I’m not able to. I’m not capable.”

He says, “I don’t get to have more,” but I think it’s more so, “I don’t know how to do it. I don’t think I can do it.” Chapman really hears it in that moment. She hears it, understands it, and it’s almost like a breakup of something that never really got to come into full fruition anyway. It never really got to be what she would’ve wanted it to be at some point.

What This Means For Chicago P.D. Season 13

Voight & Chapman Are In A Bad Place, But There’s Faint Hope

The revelation is one that has caused a wedge between the two, especially as Chapman had previously urged Voight not to do anything he couldn’t turn back on. The fact that Voight has poured water on the flames that were burning between himself and Chapman shows his mindset, and the fact that he is probably seeking to shield Chapman from any fall-out that is likely to come his way. Whilst the two never became a romantic couple, there were (and certainly still are) strong feelings between them, and a connection that might not have completely gone.

Voight might have won the battle, but it came at a cost, and one of those is that he doesn’t feel he and Chapman can be romantically involved.

It will be interesting to see how Chicago P.D. season 13 chooses to deal with these developments between Voight and Chapman, and Sigan’s comments suggest there are definitely plans to revisit this plot thread in the future. There will very likely be some emotional fallout from this, and Voight might seek to distance himself from Nina in Chicago PD season 13. How the show chooses to explore this will be interesting, and there is, of course, a faint hope of reconciliation.

Our Take On Voight & Chapman’s Relationship

It’s A Low Point For The Two, But They Can Move Past It

Voight’s obsessive quest to bring down Reid at all costs resulted in a thrilling game of chess between two of the strongest Chicago P.D. characters. Voight might have won the battle, but it came at a cost, and one of those is that he doesn’t feel he and Chapman can be romantically involved. While this is a low point for the pair, and there will be tough times ahead, they could move past it over time, and viewers shouldn’t rule out a possible Voight and Chapman coupling in Chicago P.D.‘s future.
