Costner, alongside the famed Doris Kearns Goodwin, is uncovering the lesser-known stories from America’s West. Said Yellowstone star puts a grandiose label on his other History Channel show called The West, and judging from his enthusiasm, it might well be far from your usual documentary.

Historian buffs and Costner fans started buzzing after Costner said the show would air at 9/8c Tonight. And he made it clear that these are stories that are “very true” and yet “maybe not widely known” and they constitute “the very fabric of The West.” And if working with Goodwin, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and truly one of the most admired historians alive today, was not enough of a display, Costner went ahead and told the world how they will be “amazed.”
The comment section? Complete chaos-much good. Some were already well-versed in the Costner lore, like an incognito user who mentioned they were re-reading Dances with Wolves and had just gone through The Holy Road. Talk about dedication. Another, a purely Brazilian fan, declared, “It will be a success, like everything you do,” which kind of says it all.
Yet others couldn’t resist turning attention back to Horizon, Costner‘s forthcoming Western film. “When’s the second half coming?” one commenter asked, sparking a mini thread of optimistic replies. (No official word yet, but anticipation is certainly mounting.)
However, the real standout of the comment section was another fan who penned a heartfelt essay about the first two episodes, praising Costner’s “honest and heartfelt storytelling” and laying bare the brutal realities at the foundation of America—the gore, pain, and displacement of Native peoples.” “John Colter’s escape especially moved me,” they wrote, cementing that this isn’t just fancy landscapes and cowboy nostalgia.
And how could we not get to… questionable answers in the comment section?! An enthusiastic user got a suspiciously enthusiastic response from an account pretending to be Costner himself, inviting said user to become the fan community leader for Yellowstone. (Spoiler: It was definitely not him.) Another poor soul got the pitch for a scam product mid-conversation. Classic Instagram.
There was pure excitement anyway, fueled largely by the skeptics who just seemed to be convinced by Goodwin’s presence. “Doris Kearns Goodwin is one of my favorite historians,” one user wrote. “Doesn’t get any better than her.” And honestly, they’re not wrong.
Costenr’s love for Westerns is well documented-Yellowstone, Open Range, Dances With Wolves. This man lives and breathes this genre. But the involvement of Goodwin hints that this series might just be Costner’s most serious exploration yet, and if the comments are anything to go by, viewers can’t wait to mount and ride alongside him.

So, historians, grab that popcorn because tonight will be wild. Or maybe at least educational. And with Costner being at the forefront, will definitely be a little bit of both.
