Lebanon ‘better than Spain and Greece’ – cheaper but not as safe | Travel News | Travel

A travel blogger has shared the country he loves to visit that he ranks higher than Spain or Greece. Both of these Mediterranean countries are popular destinations for Brits seeking out a sun holiday by the sea, full of popular and budget-friendly resorts. However, some people like to explore places that are more off the beaten track, such as countries in Asia and the Middle East where many Brits don’t tend to go.

Travel is an enriching experience and there are many countries around the world that offer tourists a unique and unforgettable time, such as one that a famed travel content creator has labelled one of the best in the world. YouTuber Drew Brinsky has visited every country in the world and after doing so, he revealed which ones he considered the top ten best places to visit across the globe. What may come as a surprise to many Brits is that popular spots like Spain or Greece didn’t make the list, with other countries outranking them in terms of what they have to offer.

One of those countries, the YouTube star reveals, is Lebanon in the Middle East. Placing it at the number four spot on his list, he describes Lebanon as somewhere with he “best nightlife” and “amazing vibes”. He also praises the country for its scenic “boardwalks on the Mediterranean Sea” and the “beautiful ancient Roman ruins”.

Lebanon is located on the Mediterranean coast in the Middle East, bordering Israel and Syria and located not too far from Cyprus. It is home to only 5.7 million people, almost half a million of whom live in the capital, Beirut.

Lebanon has many popular tourist attractions that have been rated highly by people who have visted before. Among them is the Temples of Baalbek. This place is an ancient Roman temple complex that has fascinated tourists. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and when you visit, you will see why it deserves that title.

Meanwhile, there is also Jeita Grotto, a system of two separate, but interconnected, karstic limestone caves tht span nearly nine kilometres in total. These caves have wowed visitors and the spot is considered one of the best things to do in Lebanon.

Other top-rated tourist attractions in Lebanon include the National Museum of Beirut, Zaitunay Bay, The Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon, the Memory of Time fossil museum, the Mim Museum and Saint Charbel Tomb.

YouTuber Drew also praises the country for its wide mountainous landscapes and its green spaces, as well as its opportunities for snowboarding and skiing. There are many stunning beaches in Lebanon, including standouts like Tyre Beach, Chir Bya, Bonita Bay and Joining Beach, to name a few.

While Lebanon is a scenic country that many tourists from around the world have enjoyed visiting, there are certain precautions that should be taken. The UK government advises against travel to certain parts of Lebanon.

Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office says that travellers should stay away form a number of neighbourhoods in Beirut. They are Tariq el Jdideh, Bir Hassan (excluding the Rafiq Hariri hospital and the Ministry of Public Health), Ghobeiry, Chiayah (south of the Rizkallah Semaan road and west of (but not including) the Old Saida road), Haret Hraik, Burj Al Barajneh, Mraije and Laylake.

They also advise against all travel to certain parts of South and Nabatiyeh Governorates, the Beqaa Governorate, the Baalbek-Hermel Governorate, the North Governorate and the Akkar Governorate.

The security environment of Lebanon remains “unpredictable” despite a ceasefire called in the conflict between Israel and Lebanese Hizballah in November 2024.

The FCDO says: “Israeli Defence Forces continue to conduct airstrikes and artillery fire at targets in Lebanon, including the South, near the Israeli and Syrian borders, and in the Nabatiyeh and Beqaa Governates north of the Litani River. The closure or disruption of roads and exit routes at short notice could affect your ability to leave the country. Do not rely on the FCDO being able to evacuate you in an emergency.”
