As summer approaches, many people will be planning to travel in the next few months, and frequent travellers will likely be looking for new and affordable destinations. With costs only increasing around the world, Brits have recently been making an effort to book holidays without breaking the bank.
With this in mind, Alfie Watts, who became the youngest-ever winner of Race Across the World back in 2024, has shared his affordable travel tips, including the country that shocked him by just how cheap it was. Speaking to eSIM travel company, Airalo, Alfie named Uzbekistan as the cheapest place he’s been. He explained: “I was absolutely shocked by the affordability of Uzbekistan when I went there in March.
“I also found Brazil and, of course, South East Asia extremely cheap from a cost of living perspective.”
For those looking to stay closer to home, Alfie revealed that he believes Prague to be the cheapest place in Europe, although prices are beginning to go up.
He said: “Prague is renowned for being cheap, but Europe is catching on to the tourism hype, as travellers are coming across Europe’s hidden gems.
“It can be difficult to find cheap places in Europe, as prices are rising due to tourism, so in some cases, it can be cheaper to travel to places further afield.”
When it comes to budgeting after your arrival, wherever you’ve jetted off to, Alfie recommends a minimum safety net of £40 a day. With this, he says you can “survive in any country” and enjoy good food and good vibes.
He also advised that if you’re opting for a package holiday, then it’s cheaper to wait until the last minute to book, especially if you aren’t particularly picky about your destination.
Alfie’s final tips are to “never eat in city centres in big chain restaurants, never eat at the airport and never say yes to the first taxi that grabs you outside the terminal, as they’re likely to take advantage of you and charge a higher fee.”
