President Trump said he would donate the $400,000 annual presidential salary, keeping true to what he did in his first term. From the moment Fox News reported the news via Twitter, sarcastic and poisonous comments filled the air, rapidly drowning whatever little goodwill the act earned.

True to the nature of the tweet itself, the responses were varied. John Gentile responded, “Big fuckin’ deal. One weekend trip to Mara-Lardo to golf costs us $3 million+,” thus spawning a roasting session. Walter Sobchak piled on, accusing Trump of “billions off shitcoin rug-pulls and various other grifts” and gave a link to an article about Trump-branded cryptocurrency shenanigans.
Many continued the irony of donating a salary while profiting elsewhere. NOTHERETHERE put it simply: “He charges us $3 million EVERY WEEKEND,” referring to Trump’s very frequent golf trips. Bald Man kept it short: “He’s making plenty grifting.” Vicky Moffatt went in with another juicy allegation, saying he’d “make up for it in kickbacks.”
Ann Mason took a shot at Fox News themselves by reminding them how they “had to cough up $787 million for lying to the public.” Analyze Your World then took the defenders to task, bringing up that Trump made “several billion from the cryptocurrency he started the day before the inauguration.”
They were not all hostile. HamiltonsKevlar applauded Trump for “Putting America first, even over himself,” but, of course, this was mocked as well. Not Now John said: “Are you counting the quarter of his presidency that he golfs?”
Hughes’s question “Where did he donate to?” was left unanswered, thus raising suspicion. AceTadace speculated, “You know he’s writing it off on his taxes in some unsavory way.” DexterDawg mocked, “Great that should pay for about 2 of his golfing trips!”
Some got surprisingly personal. Merle Speer called somebody a “liberal piece of dung,” while Wolf called critics “sore loser Democrats.” The mood was…confrontational.
The only somewhat common theme? Cynicism. HaShem’s Favorite Son wrapped it all with this: “This is what’s known as the switcheroo. Dangle something small for the rubes, whilst stealing shit loads behind their backs.”

So yeah, Trump donating his salary? Cool story. But if Twitter is anything to go by, most see it as a drop in the bucket against his larger controversies. Whether seen as an act of goodwill or a pinch of PR, one thing is for sure: the Internet yawned.
