Transformers star and Academy Award nominee Mark Wahlberg joins forces with Oscar-winner and Gladiator star Russell Crowe for this largely panned crime thriller that’s all set to stream free. While the word “panned” may put some audiences off, the movie, which follows a private detective who finds himself at the center of shady political dealings, is well worth a second look. Especially when it won’t cost you a dime.

Mark Wahlberg’s Divisive Action Thriller Shoots Onto Free Streaming
The action outing was praised by audiences, landing a score of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Directed by Allen Hughes and written by Brian Tucker, and featuring an all-star cast that includes Catherine Zeta-Jones, Barry Pepper, Kyle Chandler, Natalie Martinez, and Jeffrey Wright alongside Wahlberg and Crowe, Broken City is all set to land on the free streaming platform Tubi from July 1. You can check out the official synopsis for the 2013 crime thriller below…
“Former cop Billy Taggart (Mark Wahlberg) sees a chance at redemption for past sins when New York City’s Mayor Nicolas Hostetler (Russell Crowe) calls on him for a special job. Hostetler thinks his wife, Cathleen (Catherine Zeta-Jones), is having an affair and that it may hurt his chances for re-election. However, a bigger scandal than expected pulls in Billy right at the start of his investigation. Double-crossed by the mayor, Billy begins a relentless quest for justice.”
‘Broken City’ Is Worth Watching… So Long as You Throw Logic Out the Window
Sadly, despite the pair of Hollywood favorites taking the lead, Broken City was widely panned by both critics and audiences alike upon release. The movie now stands at just 26% from the former on Rotten Tomatoes, while achieving a somewhat more divisive score of 40% from audiences on the Popcornmeter. Alongside the harsh reviews, Broken City bombed at the box office, earning just $19 million worldwide against its $35 million production budget.
However! While the movie may not be anywhere near the best example of either actor’s work, the twisting plot and neo-noir sensibilities are easy enough to enjoy…just be sure to throw all logic out the window. So, give Broken City a chance when it lands on free streaming next month. You’ll no doubt enjoy watching Wahlberg and Crowe sharing the screen together at last.
While remaining a major Hollywood star, Mark Wahlberg is still not immune to the curse of the “rotten.” This year, the actor took on villain duties in controversial figure Mel Gibson’s action thriller Flight Risk, which saw Gibson directing from a script by Jared Rosenberg. The story centers on an Air Marshal (Michelle Dockery) who is accompanying a fugitive (Topher Grace) to trial, but while flying over the Alaskan wilderness, they begin to suspect that their pilot (Wahlberg) may not be who he seems. Unfortunately, Flight Risk marked another crash landing with critics for the actor, hitting lows of 30%.
Wahlberg, though, has plenty in the pipeline, with the actor set to star as Parker, a role previously played by Jason Statham and Mel Gibson in the crime thriller Play Dirty from Iron Man 3 and The Nice Guys director Shane Black. He’s also set to reunite with Michelle Monaghan for action-comedy sequel The Family Plan 2, and will star alongside Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in the crime thriller By Any Means.
