David Corenswet has spoken candidly about his journey to playing Superman in the latest big-screen incarnation of the comic book character. He specifically recalled his younger years, revealing that his favorite superhero growing up was, in fact, Tobey Maguire‘s Spider-Man, not Clark Kent’s alter ego. The new DCU’s Man of Steel noted that the reason he was so enamored by the web-slinger was because he was “relevant” to him, providing a superhero fantasy that he believes Superman is also capable of offering in a “different” kind of way.
Corenswet made the revelation in a recent interview on CBS Sunday Morning when he was asked by Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz at what point the idea of playing Superman first entered his thoughts. The actor recollected some of his early memories of superheroes and the impact they had on him as a youngster, naming Maguire’s version of Spider-Man as his top choice, particularly as a kid who “didn’t fit in that well.” He admitted that his age when these movies were released had a significant bearing on it, as he explained:

“I grew up on the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies. Those were the superhero movies that I saw in theaters and that were really relevant to me just because of the timing of when they came out… There’s something very romantic about the Peter Parker superhero story, which is that you’re a nerd that gets bullied, and then you get these amazing powers to do cool things with them. Superman, I think, is a different kind of superhero fantasy for a kid.”
