Warning: Contains Potential Spoilers for Gwenpool #2!
The death of Gwen Stacy is one of the most tragic moments in the history of Spider-Man comics, but Marvel just confirmed that it’s even worse than some fans think. Though the Green Goblin is largely seen as Gwen’s killer, Spidey’s actions when attempting to save her have raised some questions as to who’s really responsible, and it seems that Gwen Stacy herself has a definitive take on the situation.
Marvel’s preview for Gwenpool #2, written by Cavan Scott with art by Stefano Nesi, features the immediate fallout of Peter Parker discovering that Gwen has just been revived on Earth-616 as the all-new Gwenpool. When they go head-to-head, Gwen confirms which side of the argument over who really killed her in Marvel lore she comes down on.
The resurrected Gwen Stacy officially declares that Peter was her killer, a controversial claim which should settle a heated fan debate, yet it makes Spider-Man believe that the new Gwenpool isn’t actually who she says she is.

Infamously killed in 1973, the original Gwen Stacy is finally back from the dead; after claiming the title of Gwenpool, she delivers the hard truth to Spider-Man about his role in her devastating demise. Amazing Spider-Man #121, written by Gerry Conway with art by Gil Kane, is also known as “The Night Gwen Stacy Died”, and features the iconic and tragic turning point in Spider-Man lore. When Norman Osborn’s Green Goblin tosses Gwen from a bridge, Peter tries to web her to safety, but ends up catching her with a sudden “snap”.

Gwen Stacy Returns as Gwenpool: Spider-Man’s First Love To Become ‘A Coldblooded Killer’
Decades after her death, Spider-Man’s lost love Gwen Stacy is being resurrected, taking on a dark, murderous new identity as Marvel’s new Gwenpool.
Placing blame for Gwen’s death has been divisive among Spider-Man readers for decades, but the Weapon X version of Gwen has officially weighed in. Although it was the Green Goblin that threw her from the bridge, this rough, hardened version of the character still finds Peter guilty of her death from a broken neck. There wasn’t much he could do, but Peter has been portrayed as guilt-ridden over the traumatic event since. However, it seems that he may have worked through his guilt, as Gwen’s bold claim just makes him more sure that her reappearance is an elaborate trick.
Is The New Gwenpool Actually the Real Gwen Stacy? Peter Parker Says No
But Spider-Man Might Not Be Thinking Clear
Marvel has made a pretty big deal about Gwen Stacy’s anti-hero resurrection in the new Gwenpool series, claiming that she is the real character back from the dead, but it is possible that Peter’s theory is correct, and this is all some sort of ruse. There were strong hints in the series’ first issue that things aren’t what they seem, and Gwen has been cloned before. However, if this is at least a version of the original character, corrupted by the Weapon X program, then Gwen actually blaming Peter for her death would be an emotionally devastating development for Spider-Man.

Is Gwen Stacy Dead or Alive? Over the Years, It’s Been Hard to Tell With Marvel
Gwen Stacy has had a complicated history in Marvel Comics, she’s been alive, then dead, then alive, and now Marvel announced she’s alive, again.
It’s possible that Gwen Stacy’s all-new Gwenpool is part of a very meta plot against the original Gwenpool, the wise-cracking and fourth wall-breaking Gwen Poole. Upon her return, Gwen Stacy happens to have a healing factor, new claws, and now a fierce vendetta against Peter Parker to top it off. Gwen’s revival potentially adds a more interesting version of Gwenpool to Marvel lore, threatening to replace the first iteration in the comics. Gwenpool may have hyped up a resurrection, but the series could just be setting Gwen Poole up to earn her mantle back with Peter and Kate Bishop’s help.
Gwen Stacy Pulls No Punches With Peter Parker, Proving She Returned More Brutal Than Ever
The Resurrected Character Is Seeking Vengeance
How things shake out in Gwenpool will determine if this is truly Gwen Stacy, if she actually blames Peter for her death, and if this twist on the character could actually stick around after the 4-issue series wraps up. If she is indeed real, then Gwen’s been suddenly revived and experimented on as part of a vicious Weapon X program, so her somewhat harsh take on the Peter situation is understandable. Gwen hasn’t only returned with new powers, but the mysterious figures that brought her back could be influencing Gwen’s reaction to Spidey, exploiting the complicated circumstances around her death.
With Spider-Man’s great power, he may hold some responsibility for Gwen Stacy’s death, and she’s back to prove it in the most brutal fashion.
Now that Gwen Stacy is back with a vengeance against Peter Parker, the former love interests’ history can be explored in an all-new light. While Gwen Stacy variants from the multiverse have become villains and now-iconic superheroes in their own right, the return of the real Earth-616 Gwen could’ve brought Peter more closure on her untimely passing. However, as she savagely settles the Spider-Man fan debate over her killer, things will only get messier from here. With Spider-Man’s great power, he may hold some responsibility for Gwen Stacy’s death, and she’s back to prove it in the most brutal fashion.
