When Sochan posted an Instagram Story while in Phoenix, the basketball world went into a whirl of speculation. The Twitter generation terms such a youngster, 20 is an age of rising stars, a bit eccentric by nature and supremely versatile, dropped the location tag behind and played an obscure hip-hop cut, and the fans went berserk trying to interpret it in all sorts of ways.

The image portrays Sochan, just hanging around some Phoenix-area spot, without any specification or context. Could it ever be agitation for the frenzy? No. It was actually the choice of song. This type of underground hip-hop is probably someone’s reference; some jokes were made that Sochan might be the only NBA player who really likes underground music: “Damn never seen a bball player actually listen to good hip hop, first time,” followed by, “Bumpin Wiki & Earl? He know ball.”
The location of an NBA player would never simply mean a vacation update; it’s perfect fodder for a trade rumor. From there, the reactions poured in, connecting Sochan’s Phoenix trip to the Kevin Durant trade doldrums. “Bro getting packaged up for KD,” said one blogger, while another exclaimed, “KD to the Spurs it is.” The theory was at least somewhat plausible; Phoenix has been at the forefront of these talks in the summer, with Sochan being floated around as potential bait for a hefty trade.
Meanwhile, the skeptics looked away from the drama unfolding. “Players travel all the time without any indication of a trade” was soon countered. Others thought Sochan was taunting everyone due to his unpredictable nature. “He doing ts on purpose,” one fan chuckled, “Sochan is trolling lol,” said another.
The Spurs remain silent about any possible move, although Sochan’s social media presence tends to stir the pot. Last year, Nikki set the Internet on fire with a constantly changing spectrum of hair colors and the weirdest free throw routine ever seen. This time, it’s just one Instagram Story, but that’s plenty to set the Nike rumor mill alarm bells ringing.
If this optimistic trade scenario ever comes to pass, are they just chilling during the offseason, or is Sochan just being Sochan? But that much is clear: That kid definitely knows how to keep everyone guessing. Until either the Spurs or Suns brass makes a move, all of those theories are going to turn into memes, so better stock up.
Some of the comments were more worthwhile than others. Another highly sarcastic commenter sneered, “No one knows who is that, r e t a r d,” to which another replied, “You don’t know him? He’s fucking trolling.” The above slices provide for a very clear picture of how polarizing Sochan’s online presence can be; while some see him as a fresh and unfiltered young star, others see him as a dread for attention.

Sochan’s little Phoenix stop may mean nothing. Or it could mean everything. In the NBA offseason, when silence speaks louder than any press release, an Instagram story becomes breaking news. By all accounts, Jeremy Sochan would not have it any other way.
