Sarah Michelle Gellar and fellow actress and longtime best-friend Allison Hannigan are raising awareness about meningitis in a sad wait for some parents who have teenagers. The endorsement sponsored by GSK is the way Gellar used to educate about the risk of meningococcal disease and the need for vaccination.

Sarah Gellar revealed that she met with several people affected by meningitis such as John and mother and daughter Patsy and Jamie. Both John and Jamie contracted the disease in their teenage years, John losing vision and Jamie a limb. Hearing these stories again strengthened Gellar’s resolve to do some awareness work because it is evident teens and young adults aged 16-23 are at a greater risk.
Most teenagers do get vaccines for various strains of meningitis; however, Gellar pointed out that the vaccine for meningitis B is rarely given much consideration. She advised parents to consult their doctors regarding risks for their children and head over to Ask2BSure.com for any further information.
Comments started pouring in, praising Gellar for her advocacy and sharing personal meningitis stories. Someone shared about having meningitis at age 8 and said, “The migraines and lower back pain in the aftermath is no joke.” Another comment said, “Very scary,” since his mother was recently diagnosed.
They got serious comments but others just had to comment on how good Gellar looks; one said she “is the definition of aging like fine wine.” There were some comments about Buffy, as well, with one remark from in the throes of nostalgia: “Ty for being my childhood super hero.”
Fans of the pair rejoiced at news of the Gellar/Hannigan pairing, with one saying, “still fighting demons together.” This collaborative effort hit it out of the park for the cause with heartfelt advocacy and star power that gets people talking and hopefully to act on it.

The campaign reminds us that these orphan diseases can have devastating consequences and that a vaccine is our near-best line of defense. With Gellar and Hannigan stuck on the campaign, this health conversation spills over into their audience. And judging from the comments of the fans, this duo is right on the money.
