‘Simple’ method helps ease ‘heavy’ summer legs

As the mercury rises this week, many might find themselves grappling with an all-too-familiar sensation of ‘heavy legs’, but fear not, because you’re not alone.

GP Dr Nisa Aslam, from Puressentiel, has confirmed that it’s a typical struggle during the warmer months, with numerous people experiencing discomfort in their limbs. Dr Aslam said: “That tired, heavy feeling in our legs are incredibly common in summer when legs feel achy and fatigued, often with swelling leading to a puffy sensation.

“New research from Puressentiel found that 53% suffer from painful, achy legs and one in five suffer from painful feet.”

Why summer makes legs feel heavier

Delving into why summer exacerbates this heaviness, Dr Aslam said: “When temperatures climb, blood vessels naturally dilate. While this helps regulate body temperature, it also makes it harder for blood to return to the heart – particularly from the legs. The result? Swelling, fatigue, and that uncomfortable, puffy sensation in your lower limbs.”

The heat, it seems, isn’t the sole villain: “If you don’t have the time to sit down and give your legs a break, it’s only natural that they may feel heavy. Prolonged sitting or standing can restrict blood flow in the legs – with warm weather exacerbating this.

“Even sitting cross-legged for long periods of the day, or wearing tight, restrictive clothing and shoes, can have a big impact as they can restrict circulation and lead to tired, numb legs.”

Dr Aslam’s tips to help with summer legs

Stretch: If you’ve spent the entire day on your feet, a few simple stretches can make a world of difference. Consider hamstring and calf stretches, ankle rolls, and toe flexes to alleviate tension, enhance circulation and reduce leg heaviness.

Elevate your feet: When your legs feel weary and swollen, simply raising them can aid recovery. At work, rest them on a stool under your desk.

At home, recline on the sofa with your feet elevated. This promotes blood flow back towards the heart and diminishes swelling.

Use natural essential oils: Cooling, plant-derived ingredients transformed into essential oils like menthol activate cold-sensitive receptors in the skin known as TRPM8, providing instant refreshment for your legs. Essential oils such as juniper, fennel, lavender and rosemary have traditionally been used to soothe joints and tired muscles, and to reduce tissue inflammation and swelling.

And here I would try the Puressentiel Circulation Moisturising Cooling Cream, which contains 17 Essential oils including juniper, fennel, lavender, plus menthol.

Stay hydrated and active: Regular hydration and exercise are crucial for maintaining healthy circulation and keeping your legs feeling light.

Enjoy a warm bath: A warm soak can help relax tired muscles and alleviate aches and inflammation in your legs and feet.
