The Challenge Producer Working on X Games Competition Series

It looks like The Challenge might be getting a sister series! The team behind the long-running MTV series is cooking up a new show in association with the X Games. As the long-running action sports competition celebrates its 30th anniversary, they’re looking to bring the brand to a whole new audience.

According to a report from Deadline, Bunim/Murray is working with X Games to develop a series called X Games Battleground. Of course, Bunim/Murray is the production company responsible for The Challenge, among a myriad of other reality TV hits.

“X Games is the world’s leader in action sports competition, and we’re thrilled to be developing an unscripted series with many of the top X Games athletes that will showcase the fearless, extreme action that fans from across the globe have enjoyed for decades,” said Julie Pizzi, President & CEO, Bunim/Murray Productions.

The proposed series will bring together current X Games stars and past champions for what’s described as a “one-of-a-kind competition.” The athletes will compete in a series of “high-octane” challenges inspired by the history of the games, which typically feature action sports like skateboarding, snowboarding, and BMX.

At the end of the competition, one female and one male competitor will be crowned the best of the best. No word on if there’s a cash prize or if it’s all just for bragging rights. Either way, we’re intrigued.

“X Games Battleground will be raw and intense—uniting legends and rising stars in a fresh format,” said Jeremy Bloom, CEO of X Games. “It’s part of our strategy to tell deeper athlete stories beyond the field of play and bring fans closer to our athletes.”

As exciting as this all sounds, it’s worth noting that this series is still in its infancy. The producers plan on shopping the concept around to networks later this summer. Keep your eyes peeled for more updates.
